Default SNMP Monitoring Question

Please Login to Remove!

I am trying to figure out how to use SNMP monitoring using some command line tools in the Net-SNMP package, specifically snmpget, i.e.:

C:\>snmpget -v2c -m c:/blackberrysever.mib -c public BES1.company.com besSysHealthSrpConnectedState.1

These work fine for global V1, config, and systemhealth info, however I cannot retrieve data for individual mail server health or user health stats, such as "besMailServerHealthAvgResponseTime10min". I get a sub-id not found error when trying to get these results, probably b/c I am not specifying which mail server or user to report on:

C:\>snmpget -v2c -m c:/blackberryserver.mib -c public BES1.company.com besMailServerHealthAvgResponseTime10min

besMailServerHealthAvgResponseTime10min: (Sub-id not found: (top) -> besMailServerHealthAvgResponseTime10min)

Can someone explain to me how to use snmp to pick a particular server/user to retrieve results? I am relatively new to SNMP stuff so would appreciate any direction. Thanks!

I would try an snmp walker first just to make sure you have the MIB installed correctly, permissions are good and that is info that is actually available via the MIB.

Secondly... you can retrieve a lot of that info using the resource kit. have you played with it yet?

For 4.0, the available params are also listed in the Maintenance Guide, so that'd be an easy reference point to see if the MIB you have is for your version of BES. I know there is a 3.6 MIB on the internet, but I never saw one for 4.0.

OK, I was able to download a MIB browser which made it easier for me to figure out that I need to use the TABLE view, thus the SNMPTABLE command got me the results I was looking for. I have used the RK tools, but wanted to make sure I knew what I can do with SNMP command line tools for scripting. Thanks for the tip!

Now that you mention it jibi, I haven't noticed a 4.0 MIB as well. Some of the general info works with the 3.6 MIB on 4.0, but it's hard to get right answers for specifics (users, numbers of messages, etc..)

I found the MIB file for 4.0 on the C: drive of our 4.0 BES server, it seems to have some minor mods as compared to the 2.2 MIB file I have, but pretty much the same.

Anyone know where I can GET the 4.0 MIB???
I don't have it on my BES, and can't seem to locate it on the net either.

I am using 4.0 for Domino. Look inside the data.cab install file, it is named F13_BlackBerryServer.mib

it has a MIB that you can load into an SNMP monitor (that supports MIB files)

umm, its already enabled (unless you disable via registry mod). make sure an snmp service is running on the server.

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\SNMPAgent]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\SNMPAgent\CurrentVersion]
"PathName"="E:\\Program Files\\Research In Motion\\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\\BlackBerryServerSNMPAgent.dll"
Paste the following in Notepad, change the PathName to your current installation path w/ correct drive letter, save as whatever.reg and double-click. Reboot the server.
