Sounds to me like there is a problem with the users mailbox and the BES cannot find the "sent items" folder.
Can you verify that it is in the right place and labeled correctly inside the users mailbox. If it is, you could try running outlook.exe /resetfolders from the users desktop to reset the meta data on the folder structure.
