Default Blackberry is changing Task Due Dates

Please Login to Remove!

We came across an interesting scenario today with Task Due Dates. We are running BES 4.1.4.12 and Exchange 2007 SP1. I'm interested in learning if this is a new problem with Exchange 2007... Since my timezone has always been the same as the exchange server I've never had a opportunity to notice till someone brought it to my attention.

A task created by Outlook (2007, 2003 or OWA) with a due date does not permit setting a time. But on the blackberry, the due date is expanded to a full datetime with timezone. As a result, if the timezone on the blackberry is different from the exchange server, the due date shifts by that many hours.

For example, exchange is set to GMT-05:00 (EST) and the blackberry is set to GMT-06:00 (CST), when the task is synchronized with the phone the due date of 1/30/2008 is shown as 1/29/2008 11:00PM (CST).

From this behavior I don't really think the problem is with BES, but the actual handheld and how it handles tasks.

STEPS
1. Set timezone on blackberry to exchange server timezone - 1 (example Exchange in EST, blackberry in CST)
2. Create task with a due date in OWA, OO2007 or OO2003
3. Wait for blackberry to receive task
4. Observe task is -1 hour per step 1 (1/30/2008 becomes 1/29/2007 11:00PM)
5. Change blackberry timezone to match exchange server and create a new task.
6. Wait for blackberry to synchronize new task
7. Observe task due date is unchanged.

Is anyone else able to reproduce this behavior? It would be interesting to know if this has always been a problem or only recently introduced.

I have the same problem with an 8830 set to time zone Mountain, while the Exchange Server is Eastern. All my tasks show up as 10PM the day before on the Blackberry.

Default I have the same problem

I don't think it is a blackberry problem.

In fact, based on what you posted, it is working as expected. The phone utilizes local time zones. Unless there is a way to lock the phone to another time zone (which more than likely wouldn't work, for phone service) ... then I do not see a way of preventing this behavior.

But, I think this explains why I have a user with an appointment showing this:

GMT-6: 7 PM on Sunday (In Outlook/Exchange)
GMT-6: 4:30 PM on Monday (On the Blackberry)

I posted my thoughts on this topic (based majorly from the information on the first post here)

Inexplicable Time Difference Between Task on Blackberry and Outlook - RIM BlackBerry - Wireless Forums from AT&T

As you will note, according to RIM, the tasks aren't supposed to synch?! "This is by design." What a joke.

Just tell me which time zone is 21.5 hours ahead of U.S. central standard time (heck, even 20.5 hours would work, as I could blame an extra hour on DST ... hehe)

I have the same problem as Mr woof. My BB and Outlook are on AZ time. My BES is on Central. I create a task in AZ in outlook due today. I then, again in AZ, see the task on my BB moments later and it says due yesterday, 10p.
I had this problem when BES was on exchange 03 and also after we changed to exchange 07. I would like an answer.
