I am required to upgrade BE 4.0.7.8 (basic) for Exchange 2003 to BE 4.1.

I was going through check list and found it needs to have minimum SP3 on Ver4.0. I was wondering which service pack has least troubles reported, i.e. from SP3 to SP7.

Also Can I directly apply SP7 - is it accumulative?

You can apply SP7 but you're already using SP7 if your BES version is 4.0.7.8. The third number is the SP you have installed. Going to 4.1 is not a service pack install. 4.1 is a whole new BES package and it's not free from RIM either. If you have TSupport it's free, if not it's a $1000 one time upgrade fee.

Double check your BES version in Add/Remove Programs. Click BlackBerry Enterprise Server and then Click Here for More Info. You will get the version there.

If you are and a version that is less then 4.0.7 then you apply SP7 as they are cummulative. Just back your DB first, always backup the DB before any upgrades.

Many thanks for that. I checked the BES version as you suggested and found: 4.0.7 MR2 (Rollup) (Bundle 38).

It seems I will have to do the upgrade myself though we have some sort of TSupport. I will do the DB & BES server backups (system state etc), can you give hint on any other surprise that can come across?

Not much surprises when upgrading. Just make sure to back everything up and do the upgrade as the BESAdmin. The only error that may occur is a DB upgrade failed and there are many articles on the www. blackberry.com/btsc. It should be an easy upgrade and it doesn't take long.

1. After upgrade do I need to upgrade BES Manager on the server as a separate step or it happens automatically as part of server upgrade to ver 4.1.2.

2. Is the BES router is upgraded as well ? (it is running on same server as BES server)

3. Does the name of SQL database remains the same or a new DB is created during upgrade process. I understand a new schema is implemented during upgrade but not sure if it happens on the existing Database.

My setup is:
ServerA (Win2003) - BES server/router/BES Manager - all services running under BESService account (domain account in local admin group). Appx 200 accounts - just few disabled.

ServerB (Win2003) for SQL database (SQL2000) and the same above BESService account is the DB owner of BESMgmt database.

I intend to RDP on ServerA and do the upgrade.

That is automatic, just move the BB Manager from the All Programs over the one on the Desktop. If you open the BB Manager and see a ghost(white) BES then it's the legacy manager.

Yes it is.

The name does not change during the upgrade, only the schema changes
