Default Why does my device sync with Public Contacts

Please Login to Remove!

Why does my device sync with Exchange Public Contacts.

I've been told on serveral occasions that this is not possible. But I can see public contacts on the handset.

I have even tried deleting the public contacts, deleting the BES user account and wiping the handset.

Whenever I do an Enterprise Activate (Wireless) the contacts re-appear.

Help!!, thanks

I do not want any contacts that reside in the Public Exchange folders on the phone.

Are you the BES Admin? If so you can remove the connection to the GAL (I don't remember how, but when at work I can look) and ALL users will lose that connection, but al BES functions will still work. Just no GAL lookup.

I would agree w/amukhey. Without using a third paryt piece of software, there's no way to sync Public Folders. I suggest wiping the device then removing the account from BES. Once you've done this, edit or add a Public Folder contact to the folder where you think the contacts in question are coming from and assign it to a category that you know isn't being used, e.g., "NoSync". Add the account back to BES and reactivate the device. Filter contacts by category. If you're getting Public Folder contacts, the "NoSync" category will be one of the filter options.

If you've found a way to natively sync Public Folders wirelessly, you'd better apply for a patent. That's something all of us on Exchange would love to see in the environment, out of the box.

Ciao

Have you possibly got a copy of the public folder contacts in a secondary contacts folder in your Outlook? Any contacts folder which has 'Outlook Address Book' in it's property settings will get synced to the BlackBerry.

If this is the case just got the properties of the secondary contacts folder and untick 'Outlook Address Book'. Then wipe and re-activate your BlackBerry.

Is he talking about the Global Address List or Public Folder Contacts? Since it isn't possible to sync the Public folder I assume he is talking about the GAL.

It's not the GAL, there are only 40 people in there. There was a Public Contacts folder with over 2000 contacts. This is still appearing on the handsets. I have now deleted the contacts from the public folder, deleted the user account from bes and wiped the handset. Whenever I do an enterprise activate all 2000+ contacts sync whilst activating. I have no idea where these are coming from now, since I deleted the public folder contacts..

If you can't see the contacts in your mailbox, I've no idea where they're coming from. As a test, you might want to set up a dummy mailbox with nothing in it, then activate the device. I would guess that if the contacts don't show up upon activation, that they must be buried somewhere in the original user's mailbox.

Keep us posted. This is an interesting one.

I can see the local contacts associated with the exchange mailbox + the public contacts too. I've check the besadmin exchange account and that has no contacts listed in outlook... Thought that may be causing problems as it has access to all exchange accounts.

I also would love to know how to duplicate your "problem". I'd kill to be able to sync public folders wirelessly. I would call BES Support and see if they can get to the bottom of it with you.

If you don't have paid support, you can take the PIN from any device, register for a free Express Server (you don't have to actually setup that server) and you'll get a free support case with Blackberry.

Call RIM; this makes no sense ... BES does not do this.

Cool Are you using Add2Exchange

This could happen if your admin has set up Add2Exchange? This program will copy any calendar contact or task from a public folder to your private default or some subfolder of your contacts and it will show up in your private and BES copies it to the handheld. From your thread it sounds like you removed the mailbox and public folder so this is probably not the case, but if it is set up, then this would happen exactly the way you describe. A2E works ahead of Blackberry, from the public to the private with any kind of relationship and conflict resolution you want, so you can essentially edit a public folder item from the handheld - if you want that kind of thing to happen. We have a public contact folder with pictures of the employees on it, and public to private relationships so when someone calls, the picture of the person shows up... kind of wow factor for the users. If they delete it, it will recopy.

does this explain your issue?
