Please forgive me if this is posted in the wrong forum..

I have recently joined a company and taken over Blackberry Support.

I seem to get about 15-20 automated emails a day from one particular user indicating the device has been unlocked. i have searched with the Bes server but cannot seem to find anywhere where this message is being genreated from...... would it be a local setting on the handheld ? (8700) Our Bes server is running 4.1 on Exchange.

This is an example of the message i receive on a daily basis. I have blanked out the user and pin details.

Sounds like this user has a Duress Notification Address set in their IT policy.
Password Policy Group > Duress Notification Address

You can set this policy so that you will get notified if a user is unlocking their BlackBerry against their will (under duress).

My guess is that's what's happening, and I hope the user is misusing this function and is in no real trouble.

I think a phone call to this user and/or immediate follow-up is required on your part.

I had this with one user.

Check your policy - is the duress notification setup?

For example:

When a user is in duress, they have to move the first letter of their password to the end, so if their password to unlock is abcdef, the duress password becomes bcdefa.

I had a user who set their password, then kept entering it wrong, but it actually matched the duress settings. So their BB would unlock, they thought they were using the right password, and EVERY time they unlocked it I'd get an email.

I tried to explain it to the user, they got totally confused. In the end I remotely set the users password, told them what it was, and it was OK after that.

I thought this was a neat feature so I enabled it. 18 months later, with full deployment, I was getting a few of these a week. I then disabled it! Seems pretty worthless given all the false alarms in a large environment.

I'd be inclined to agree. I also think that, unless I remind my BB users about the feature (and how to use it) on a weekly basis, they wouldn't invoke the duress password in an emergency anyway, they'd just hand the BB over!

This worked as suggested, he was was using the duress password the whole time instead of the asisgned password.
