I have a CEO who currently has a BB8100 that is physically broken. T-Mobile has sent him a new one that I have to activate. I do have to use the existing battery from his old phone and I'm assuming swap the SIMM card from the old one into the new. I currently have BES 4.1. My questions are the following:

How do I transfer all settings, apps and data to the new phone?

Should I completely wipe the broken phone first?

Any and all advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

How broken is it? Can it still be connected to a PC for a back/up? If so do it and use the switch device wizard.

It's just the volume buttons on the side that are broken. So using the desktop manager switch devices wizard will be okay to use? What about swapping out the SIMM card?

Ok, I cannot help you with the BES part at all (I know nothing!) Yes, you will use the DM manager. First, connect the old device and do a backup. Connect the new device and select Switch Device wizard. If Switch device does not work you can always do a restore to the new device. It will work just fine.

And the SIM card and battery will work. Just pop them in.

And yes, once you are satisfied that the new phone has everything and is fully functional. Take the old device and Menu>Options>Security Options>General Settings>Menu>Wipe Handheld.

I think if you do a switch device using Desktop Manager with a MAPI pointed to the users mailbox it will do a wired Activation for that user. That is one of the points of using the switch device wizard.

So make sure that Outlook is pointed to the correct mailbox, if not it will activate to the wrong mailbox.

My supervisor did that once by accident and activated a BB that wasn't meant for her, lol.

If you want to avoid that you could just do a complete backup, then restore it to the new BB and then set a new activation password, complete the activation from the new BB and you're good to go.

Not sure on the BES piece. But the other should only take a few minutes.

It all depends on how many contacts, call logs, calendar appointments, messages are on the device. It could take a while if there are alot of items.
