Default Upgrade to 4.1.2 fails

Please Login to Remove!

I am in middle of upgrade from 4.0.7 to 4.1.2 and process fails with error: 'DB Upgrade failed. Error executing an SQL Statement'

I have logged in as BESAdmin which has DBO on separate SQL 2000 server

I was wondering where I can see upgrade log and find out exact message

Setup is Windows 2003 & Exchange 2003, SQL 2000 on Win2003

Thanks in advance

Thanks, it fixed the error message. With the help of SQL DBA, database was created manually from blank database(after old DB files were removed) and the upgrade process proceeded further. Server is rebooting now. My question will it bring back all users list or I will have to import it from previously exported list? Or there is another way of bringing the information back?

If you have a blank db. You will have to perform EA on all the BlackBerry. This is bad.

I would restore the old db. Bump your BESAdmin account up to SA and re-run the upgrade.

Will the upgrade process will still run if we cancel the process in the middle - ( after reboot now I am getting SQL error message again for creating MDSS database)?

Also what would be the roll back procedure at this stage, I mean if we cancel the upgrade?

Finally got hold of RIM tech support and fixed SQL schema upgrade problem. But ran into MAPI problem when opening new BES manager. Tech suggested to recreate the BES account as per KB04293. That done new BES manager (BBmgrw32.exe) comes with Visual C++ run time error - abnormal program termination. It is so difficult to hold of RIM tech (last time I was on hold for about 3 hrs) - anyone have idea how to fix it? I can test MAPI and SQL connectivity OK. All the BES services starts OK.

Thanks in advance.

PS: Also what is the easy method of rollback at this stage?

Check out this KB:
BlackBerry Search Results

That should help you get past the error. You don't need to roll back either. Once your past this error you should be ok.

If you did want to roll back you need to clean uninstall the BES, restore your old DB and install the version you were running previously.

Gibson thanks for responding. Ok, this artcle says cause of this is "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 is not installed. This is a prerequisite for BlackBerry Manager in BlackBerry Enterprise Server software versions 4.0 and 4.1."

But it is already there and server was previously working perfectly on BES 4.0.7.

I have once again sought RIM support and it is more than 6 hrs no one has contacted me yet.

I would like to get past this error but want to be prepare for rollback. As you said if I restore the old DB and then install previous version, won't it would overwrite the DB during installation?

Also if I run 4.1.4 on the top of current setup / problem - will it fix it (though I doubt it)?

Added later: on server I checked .Net framwork version at C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework and the latest directory is :v1.1.4322

I also tried to run '.NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1' but setup gave message the system is already on higher version and don't need to install it.

For a roll back just backup the 4.1 DB and move the backup somewhere safe then you can restore the old DB.

You could rerun the setup again to see if that will help. It can't hurt at this point. If that doesn't fix it then roll back.

We tried that at one point, but since old database has old schema it didn't work. Last time i spoke with RIM tech, he was looking for a table proxy-???, which should have come with 4.1.2 upgrade and he thinks that was causing BES manager to crash with runtime error. Otherwise services are running ok.

<added later>: if we give system blank database then bes console comes up ok. it is only upgraded database is causing the console to crash. perhaps this might give you hint.

cheers

Couldn't believe myself. I was seconds away from uninstall process when I ran the upgrade again. It went through very quickly and one reboot later new BES Consol came up with all the information! I tested with a user and all was working OK.

Probably RIM need to add in their knowledge base.

Thanks all guys who responded to this.

Hmmm.. back to work I suppose.

Here is how I look now
