My boss's boss lost a month's worth of email on his blackberry. It is connected to a BES which uses Exchange 2003.

As the exchange admin I was thrust into this position and do not know what I am doing yet.

Will someone tell me:
1) how to get the last month's worth of email to resync to his phone.
2) what I need to start doing to get up to speed with BES/BB admin support.

He has a Curve.

I will be getting an 8700c for my use soon (but cannot wait for that).

I'd remove his account from the BES
wipe the blackberry
re-add to the BES
set activation
intialize

Blackberry will resync according to the population settings.

Read the Administrator's Guide and get a copy of Professional Blackberry by Worx.

If I can indulge you with one more newbie question, how do I find the population setting? Is that associated with the server or user? (nothing shows up in the BB Manger Help when I search for population).

What version BES?

Ok .. login to your BES
launch the manager
on the left select your BES server
click on the Server Configuration Tab
Click Edit Properties
Click Messaging on the left
Note settings for Message prepopulation

unless your boss received less the 750 messages in the past month then it won't work. 14 days upto 750 messages is a max, whichever limit is met first.

Just got off the phone with BB support and was told that there was no way to adjust the number of messages that can be downloaded when reactivating the account.

Right last 14 days or 750 messages, which ever is greater.

It appearst he device ran out of memory and removed some subset of mail (not starting with the oldest).

Is there a way to provide a warning when device memory is running low so action may be taken to prevent the indiscriminant deletion of email?

Just wiping and re-activating has not worked for me and I thought this was in error.

So, for pre-population to work you must not only wipe the BlackBerry, but also remove the account from the server and re-add?

The prepopulation will only happen if when you activate your pin number changes (ie switching devices) or you are a new account, ie delete from server and re-create account. If the PIN does not change, then the device does not pre-populate.
