Default General Question... BES version Versus BB Device versions

Please Login to Remove!

Hello Again.

Thanks for the help on my other questions. I have a very general question here.

So I'm running BES 4.1.3.18 .... and I have varied BB versions from 4.1.0 up to current [I know depending on carrier and the device that could vary greatly].

And I understand that in the newest 4.3 [4.5] reincarnation I will hopefully have the ability to upgrade BB device o/s over wireless.

But my question is... how much effort do you take to keep your handhelds up to date? Do you wait till you see problems before bothering? Or take a proactive approach?

I have a relatively small deployments of about 70 Devices. But I noticed it can take up too an hour or more to do an upgrade correctly. [I had kinda a horror show with one when I realized when they upgraded the o/s they changed the field name for the nextel direct connect.. had to restore all of the user's phone numbers from an old backup].

On top of the previous questions... do I want to wait for 4.3 before I really jump on upgrades?

Again thanks for the sage-like advice.

Hi Chris,

I'm in MA too.

Prior to BES 4.1 / BerryStats it was really difficult to keep track of just what everyone was using BB version / OS / Carrier so at least 4.1 helps from that perspective.

There is no rule on when to upgrade, lt would likely depend on your carrier contract so if you bought a device and your terms were 2 years, i'd look at updating once the contract was up.

We have well over 2000 devices across every carrier so it gets more involved and more friction based. Unless your device breaks or we deem them out of date. I know going into this year we wanted to upgrade any device that was not on OS 4.1, going into 2009 it will be any device that is OS 4.2 etc .. The bulk of our users are still on a 7290 and we have been working with carriers on buy back incentives as well the Blackberry trade up program.

Now don't hold your breath for wireless OS updates, I doubt we'll see it this year. I plan to utilize Web Desktop Manager to simplify OS updates.

I can run an audit on who is below X OS level .. send them the URL for WDM and force the OS update when they plug in.

My BES is 4.1.4 and we still have BB with the 4.0 OS. The only reason to upgrade it to take advantage of new feature or IT Policy function.

Ok..

So basically don't bother trying to upgrade unless I have specific failures or need to take advantage of options. That's the answer I was hopin for lol.

Thanks,
