Default BES Express

I have a copy of the free, single user BES/Professional Software Express downloaded from Rim's web site. It is the Exchange Server version. I am currently using BIS and I am the only Blackberry user. My question: Can I configure this software to only handle pushing MDS and nothing else? I would like to experiment with the MDS studio and need the server portion to push the app to the phone. I know that there is a full blown MDS only server, but can this software be used in a similar fashion? Thanks.

Thanks for your post, but I am confused. This is a quote from the licensing FAQ that is at the top of this forum. It says:

BlackBerry Professional Software

BPS is intended to be the replacement platform for Express Edition. It is (currently) a free download from the BlackBerry website and you get a copy of the software, a licence and a one user CAL all free. . . The downsides with this are . . . BPS does not have a full BES feature set. To elaborate on this final point - users have full email and PIM reconciliation as you would get with a normal BES, but there is no MDS (Studio, not Service) which means it's not possible to build custom applications, but existing java apps can be pushed through the BPS software.

The MDS Studio is available as a separate download (I have it). As I read this FAQ, I can then use the BPS to push the app down. Or what am I missing? If I can use it to push the existing apps down, do I have to have Exchange to do that or will it work stand alone?

The confusion here lies over the letters MDS, as there are two elements called MDS on the BES. There is 'Mobile Data Service' (which web based apps run through) and 'Mobile Data Studio' (the vessel used to create apps). BlackBerry Professional Software has the Service but not the Studio. This means that if you have an application that's been written by others (such as Bloomberg for BlackBerry) then you can push this out to devices and run it. As BlackBerry Professional Software does not have the Studio however, you cannot use the BES to design and build your own custom applications - for this you would need a full version BES. My BES licencing thread covers the different types of BES in more detail here:

Thanks for your response, but I am still confused. Perhaps I can explain my confusion better. Here is what I have:

1 copy of BPS which we all agree has the MDS Service to push exisiting applications.

I also have 1 copy, installed, of BlackBerry MDS Studio v4.1 SP3, installed and running. According to this link, no license for the MDS Studio is necessary: BlackBerry - BlackBerry | Wireless Handheld Devices, Software & Services from Research In Motion (RIM) (Obtain a License Key (not required for BlackBerry MDS Studio v4.1 Service Pack 3 and later))

So, I have the MDS Service and I have the MDS Studio. What am I missing? Thanks for working with me on this.
