Default Upgrading from BES 3.6 to BES 4.1.4

Please Login to Remove!

BES 3.6 SP5
Exchange 2003 SP2

Hi Everyone,
I am trying to follow the following documentation in the 4.1.4 upgrade guide ...
Livelink - Redirection

This guide states that you can upgrade the 3.6 database to version 4.1.4 on another server (new hardware (cutover process)). You can preview the migration before you actually migrate the users.

I have the original server running 3.6 and I have a new server with 4.1.4 installed but not running.

I am a little confused with the documentation on how to get the 3.6 database moved over and upgraded. Do I backup the database on the 3.6 server, restore it to the 4.1.4 server (overwriting the blank database that was created during install) and then run the createdb tool to upgrade the blackberry configuration database?

If anyone has performed this upgrade before and can offer any insight please let me know. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

When upgrading and moving to new hardware you have 2 choices:

1. Upgrade the 3.6 BES on the old hardware then move to new hardware

2. Move the 3.6 BES to the new hardware then upgrade

The path you have taken doesn't work. You only need to run besmigration.exe if you have more than 200 users. If you have less just run the upgrade in place.

The database will upgrade when you run the 4.1 install, you can't move your 3.6 database to the 4.1 BES and make it work.

Follow one of the paths above to get your BES upgraded and moved.

Gibson is right. You have to install 3.6 on the new hardware and then detach and attach the .mdf and .ldf db files to the new server. make sure to name the BES server the same name as the old one. You can shutdown the old server and start the new server. Make sure that everything is working properly and then start the upgrade process. GL

Its a variation of the spork-edge cutover. Long live the spork!
