BlackBerrys with Digital Cameras: A Problem for IT or Non-Issue?
 
Howdy BES admins,

I'm curious how you all feel about BlackBerrys with digital cameras like the Pearl or Curve as opposed to the 8800 series devices, which don't have cameras. Do you all care if your users have BlackBerrys with cameras?

This post points out a number of reasons why companies might not want devices with cameras, why they might and a few ways that IT departments disable such cameras--besides painting over the lenses.

What do you think? Does the security risk out weigh the potential benefits to business users?

This is 100% a per company decision. GE doesn't allow camera phones at some of their offices (specifically manufacturing plans) ... I would think places like Raytheon and other government contractors are the same.

For my company, there is no valid reason to disable a camera ... we don't do any Top Secret things on a regular basis, so why take functionality away from someone.

One reason the 8800 series is so popular is because it simply takes the option of a camera away ... therefore no one needs to make a decision about disabling it.

We no longer disable the cameras on our devices, however, none of the standard devices in the US have cameras (we haven't offered the Pearl or Curve as part of our BB device list). We do have users in other countries who have them, though.

I fought long and hard to get even an 'acceptable use' policy written for camera phones and after a year of the policy getting re-written by upper management it came out and and didn't even have the word 'camera' in the policy. I was told it isn't IT's responsibility to dictate camera phone usage, that's HR's job.

So I gave up.

yes, this is absolutely at the company's discretion. If your company has some very sensitive data that you really want to secure, taking the camera away from people is a definite option. We only have about 40 blackberries in our company, and only 4 of them have cameras, but I honestly don't see us disabling them at any point. We don't have the need to.

Taking away the camera takes away the personal edge of the device.

People want to use the device for more than just Business sometimes.

If you can encourage the user to use the device for personal use you will get them using it even more for business!!!
