Don't let this wording scare you.
The device doesn't actually become "disabled" as a result of the Erase & Disable command.
It merely wipes the handheld, just as if you initiated the wipe manually on the device.
The 'disable' in this case simply means that the device will no longer be activated on the BES, and will require a new activation.
There's no harm in doing an 'Erase & Disable Handheld' from the BES.
