Default Veteran Domino BES admins - please read

Lately my management has been expressing concern with the quality of their BES experience. Most of their complaints have to do with the amount of time it takes to reflect changes from their Notes client to their BB device, specifically with deletions and/or reading emails, which could take up to an hour at times. What things should I verify and/or change before telling them that's just the way it has to be?

Many of our users have several folders in their mail file and don't like to delete their emails, one reason for our 60 day purge policy. If the user files or deletes an email from Notes, would the number of documents and/or size of the mail file impact the time of the reconcile process?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Management has very valid concerns. It sounds like you definitely do have problems.
Taking up to an hour to reconcile deletes and/or unread marks from desktop to handheld is certainly not normal. It's an indication that something is wrong.

Before you tell management "that's just the way it has to be" you should certainly consider whether you want to keep your job or not. A line like that is going to ruffle some feathers for sure, especially since it's an incorrect statement.

What kind of load is your BES under? How is your environment set up?
You indicate Domino 6.5.6 and BES 4.1.4, but only specify one piece of hardware in your post. Are you running BES on your Domino mail server? (That would be ill-advised.)
Where's the BES database? Are you using MSDE or MS SQL? Is that also on your Domino Mail server?

Please describe your environment in a lot of detail, and we'll be able to offer some more sound advice.

The BES server is running all services for BES except MDS, this includes MSDE2000. The mail server is separate as well as the sametime server. The version of Domino is consistent across all of it. NBES is currently 785 Meg, SQL 125 Meg, BMDS 120 Meg.

I've noticed later in the evening, changes via the Notes client are replicated much, much faster then during business hours. That's why I wasn't sure what I might be overlooking since according to RIM we meet the requirements for the amount of users we have.

I'm open to any suggestions.

Sounds like your BES may been facing hung threads during peak office hours. How about contacts lookup? Is it slow during peak hours? If yes, I would suggest that you call up RIM to review the BES logs and hopefully adjust the BES' working thread pools.
