Question BES for Lotus Domino

Please Login to Remove!

Newb here, please be easy...

Here's what I have:
I am installing BES4 for Domino on a Windows Server 2003 Ent R2 SP2 Machine. I have IBM Domino running on a Linux Machine. In the requirements at the beginning of the installation document, it states that Domino must be running on the same machine as BES, which I thought was unusual considering everything that I had previously read proclaimed that it is recommended that the mail server be a separate server.

Now, Domino operates off of nsf databases. BES is asking for the DB2 database or the SQL database to connect to. I chose the DB2 database because it is also made by IBM, but I have no DB2 database on my linux server. I also found after selecting the DB2 Database, it has the options to select if the database is local or remote. I obviously used remote because it is on a different server, but I don't have any clue how I would connect BES to the Domino Server, especially since I don't have a DB2 database.

Is there a connector that I might need or is it even possible without installing the Domino Server on the Windows Server? I am extremely lost here and need as much help as I can get. I can also provide additional details upon request.

Thanks everyone in advance.

BES needs to be installed on a Domnio server. Just not a Donimo server that is acting as a mail server.

Thanks for the reply...
So I can install Domino on the Windows Server (That will not be used to send/receive email) and finish the install of BES. Then how would I link that to the existing Linux based Domino server? And after I do, can I remove Domino server from the windows server, or must it stay on the windows server for as long as I will have BES on the server?

BES will read the person doc for the user's mail file.

BES runs as a task in Domino this is why it requires Domino to be installed.

BES uses a Domino API to read the documents/mail on your linux Domino server via NRPC.
It is not recommend to install BES on your Domino Mailserver.

first of all, get your domino server connected through the domino. from the existing mail server, try trace command

trace NewBlackberryServer

the NewBlackberryServer is the server name (that you named it once you created the server.id using your Administration Server) or it could be the ip address. both can be used.

once you run the command, you should be able to see something like

Connected to server Mail1/ABC (if you successfully connected both server)

Unable to find path to server Mail/ABC (if it fail)

if using the trace command and the server get connected, then you just install the BES on top of it.

otherwise, pls check your Connection Document in order for you to connect both server.

fyi, domino does not care what type of OSes in your Domino Name Network. it can be mix of windows, red hat, aix, and solaris. but pls verify that your domino is connected using the trace command.

Thanks everybody for their replies.
So I got BES installed and have no means of administration. I did some research and I'm still not sure why the management console did not install with this nor can I find out how to install it. Its BES 4.1.4. So I found the BAS (Blackberry Administration Service) and am trying to install it. The setup looks just like the BES setup and has many of the same screens. In the "Database Setting" Screen, it autofills the values that were used in the setup of BES and grays them out where they cannot be modified. The only field that can be changed is the database password. I insert my password and click next and get the following error message:

"Error reading the mailstore type from the database"

Not sure what I am doing wrong here. My domino servers are linked, had no problem with that after I got kind of an idea of what I was doing with them, but I am getting this error. I cannot find it anywhere... Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks again!
