Default Like Clockwork: email account is no longer accessible

Please Login to Remove!

I am a new IT administrator and am having trouble getting all the users in my small company to stay connected to our new Exchange 2003 server. I apologize if this is not the place to post this question, but I did not see another forum topic that seemed applicable.

Anyway, like clockwork every Saturday night all my Blackberry users get the following message:
------------------------
This email account is no longer accessible by your BlackBerry device. This issue is likely caused by a recent change to the password used to access this account.

To resume receiving email from this address, login to your BlackBerry Internet Service account and verify the password is correct for this email account.

Email Account Information:
Email Account: [email address]
Email: [email address]
UserID: mydomainaccount

Sent via BlackBerry from [my user's provider]
-----------------------------

I have seven BB users, all using either T-Mobile, AT&T, or Verizon, all with different model phones. There is no scheduled maintenance on the network or Exchange server and nothing in the event logs showing any error or information at the time they all get disconnected.

Any ideas?

What do you have to do to get them reconnected?

It sounds like the BIS is losing connection (or being refused) to your Exchange server at that time.

I've had this happen on my personal BIS account on occasion but nothing regular.

I had it every single night at the same time. It was due to the backups being performed on Exchange.

I too suspect therer must be a kind of backup, which shuts down the exchange store. You then get the message wrong password from the imap or pop daemon.

Find the script which shuts down the store and add the imap and pop server. Or shut down your internet-connection during the backup.
If they are also down, the BIS service which polls the mailserver will not get a login denied, instead it cannot connect.
That might solve the problem, if it does not take for hours to backup the mailstore.

We have backups done 7 days a week and they don't cause a problem the other 5.5 days. The problem is with Outlook Web Access, not the Blackberry devices. We do not have a BES in our organization so the BBs use OWA to sync with Exchange. On any of the accounts that get "un-validated", when you try to log into OWA through any browser it always comes back saying "The Local Security Authority Cannot Be Contacted". It is an html page that says this, so that page is getting served from the Exchange server. It's just baffling me why it's always on a set schedule, and how it always fixes itself on it's own Monday morning.

Backups may be done every day. But maintenance is usually done on the weekends. Maintenance tends to take more time and could possibly mean more systems are taken offline than on the weekdays. If this is happening at exactly the same time every week then you need to talk to your operations department to find out what they do differently on the weekends.

What Exchange Service Pack are you running?

How many Domain Controllers do you have?

I am the operations department =)

Database maintenance is run daily from 1am to 5am, mailbox store maintenance is run daily at midnight, and full text indexing is run daily at 3am.

We only have 35 mailboxes so database maintenance is always completed rather quickly.

There is nothing scheduled, that I can find, that only runs on Saturday nights.

It sounds like a Domain Controller is being taken offline Saturday night and brought up again Monday morning.

We use to have one office building where the A/C was shut off Saturday night, and turned back on Monday morning. We had the local server on a schedule to coincide with the A/C not running. TreeDude is right, something scheduled is happening here.

Both DCs are up 24/7. I am the IT Director and Facilities Manager as well =) ... we are a small company. Anyway, the first time this happened I spent all day Sunday troubleshooting the issue. Nothing I did helped. I demoted and promoted both DCs (waiting over an hour between each action).

The strange part is that when this happens, *I* can still log in through OWA just fine, as can any NEW user I create through Active Directory. It just seems to be all existing users not inside the Administrators AD group that receive the error when they try to log in to OWA.

Have you checked the existing users accounts to be sure they can log in 24x7?

If they aren't allowed to log in Saturday night until Monday morning, they won't be able to use OWA.

You've narrowed it down to the users that exist. What is different from a current user and one you create? That has to be where the trouble is.

I know this isn't much help, but since this occurs "like clockwork", something on a schedule is doing it. It may not be something you set up. Still, it is happening on a schedule.

If a new user that you recently created isn't effected by this, then something is configured on the old user accounts that is preventing them from authenticating during that time frame.

It's just a matter of figuring out what it is.

Sorry, with the information I have, that's the best I can do.

I know how frustrating it is....

Yeah, I have deduced as much as you have posted above, but bouncing ideas off other people certainly helps. I was hoping someone could post some insight about what could be scheduled that actually would prevent users from logging into OWA other than what I have already found.

If anyone comes up with any more ideas, please let me know! I will continue to search...

Are you using ISA2004 or 2006? You may have a rule that runs during that time on it.

No, we do not use ISA in the organization. We do all content filtering on our Firewall.

Does the content filtering have a schedule?
Could be a firewall setting.
