Default BES Health Check

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

Do any of you guys run any health checks or look for anything in particular that identifies a potential problem with a BES?

Aany SQL reports you run, any key things you look for in logs to make sure the BES is healthy and secure, any key items in the event sumary etc...

Interested to know from both a domino and exchange stand point.

Cheers.

I do ... mainly look through the BES Application log, BES performance logs, mail server performance logs, sql performance logs, and sql application logs.

Start with perfmon and bes application logs those are the two big ones.

I'd post all my info here, but then why would I ever get paid? Actually ... it took hundreds of hours and hundreds of server analysis to come up with the methodology used when I / my company does health checks.

in this line, can anybody recommend a useful monitoring utility for BES. We've looked at Boxtone, but it is actually too much for our purposes. Just need something that will keep an eye on the BES and alert us if anything untoward happens. I know my spec is a bit vague, but just looking for some guidance on what the pro's are using.

If you want something intelligent you're going to need to pay for something intelligent.

What do you want to be alerted on? MAPI Problems? server down? You need to provide more details and requirements for anything except for answers shot from the hip.

Brendan have you looked at the SNMP trap monitoring? And also BES Alerts built into the BES?

You find that useful? You'd be a first for me. Outside of the SRP Connect / Disconnect ... blech for me.

... I would tend to disagree. The only thing consistent I get from the SNMP components is inconsistency. Sure BESAlert works ... just wish it were more granualar ... lots of email filtering needs to be done to make it really effective.

i think the team misunderstood my question. My company is willing to pay for the monitoring, but Boxtone was just too much. Need something to keep an eye on SRP, dropped threads, pending messages etc. "Basic" monitoring stuff really. BESAlert has been poo-poo'd across the board so not even going there.

While were here, a question from my manager...
Anything out there that will allow Blackbery to print to network printers in our building.
NOTE: Not my decision. Trying to dissuade him from this futile path, especially as they are about to introduce a swipe-card system to enable you to send print to one printer, but actually only print at whichever printer you swipe your card. Management, go figure.

Hmmm.... A colleague of mine spent much time looking into the printing thing.

Have you checked out Cortado and also Dynoplex? I think GPXS may also do a printing solution.

I think there is also some software that will allow you to send the mail you wish to print to a fax (via the phone) and it will print it out.

My point is......... If I have a blackberry and I want to print but I'm not on a pc... can't I just send it to someone in the office and they can print and give it to me?Raise it with management.. Team work to print!!

You could probably script something using the BES RK to check for the things you are interested in monitoring. I believe most of the monitoring software Boxtone, B*Nator etc all use the Resource Kit as an interface for monitoring such things anyway!

This type of reporting and much more can be accomplished with the tool:

StealthAUDIT

Check it out at:

stealthbits.com

Look for the BlackBerry Solution.

We also have AD & Exchange Reporting with Correlation to BlackBerry.

If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask.
