Question Setting up BES for home E-mail

Please Login to Remove!

I'd like to set up a MS Exchange box and BES for my home e-mail so that I can have access to my Outlook e-mail, calendar, contacts, etc... just like I have at work.

However, the inexpensive (i.e. non-commercial) data packages offered by Rogers or Telus state "BIS only"... whatever that means.

So my questions is this: Can I pull off the set-up I want with the less expensive (personal) data plans OR is it the case that Rogers (say) will somehow block usage of BES if you are on a data plan that only permits BIS?

I've looked around the forums and the 'net and I haven't got a clear answer on this one. I'm hoping a BBerry expert can lend thier expertise here. Thanks.

You cannot use a BIS data plan and activate on a BES. It's just not possible.

Also, if you're concerned about the different in price points for the BIS and BES data plans... how are you going to afford an Exchange server?

I'll worry about the MS Exchange pricing. I've got pull at Microsoft.

So you are saying that if you have a dataplan that is BIS only then there is no way to use BES + MS Exchange to manage your email?

How is access to the BES server restricted from the BBerry device?

Yes, that's what I'm saying. A BIS data plan does not offer the proper provisioning service books (among other things) for activation on a BES. You need a BES data plan to attach to a BES.

Default Third Party

Have you considered a third party host for your needs??

setting up and Exchange/BES server is a lot of work for one account.

Of course if you want to take that route your best options is an SBS server and you load BES on it. I do it all of the time with absolutely no problems whatsoever.

I am not sure if the forum allows for me to share any third party services but the one I have in mind does hosted Exchange with a 3GB mailbox for $8.95 a mos. and BB Hosting for another $10.00.

Thanx mmclean. I'd be interested in hearing more about the SBS server. Send me a PM and we can talk.
