Default License transfer question - 06-12-2008, 04:02 PM

I got thrown into running the BES at my company and we have 18 out of 20 licenses filled. We are migrating another company (which we bought) to ours, and wanted to just transfer their licenses to our server. We are using enterprise edition, and I assume they are as well. Their IT guy gave me their license key and I entered it an now have a total of 40 licenses with 22 free. Is there anything else I need to do, and what is stopping me from adding that key to another BES at another company? Not that I would...it's just hypothetical.

Welcome to the forums!

I do that all the time with our 4 BES servers (we buy them in packs of 10). If one is running low and another has enough spares, I will move the license key from one to the other while I order more.

Wirelessly posted (Curve 8330)

There is nothing wrong with moving them from one BES to another is my understanding. I am pretty sure you cannot use them simultaneously on different servers though. The CAL is not specific to a BES.

How do you actually move the file itself from one server to another? Thanks!

There is no file. The CAL is just a key code.
You just need to remove it from one BES and enter it another.

we can't remove it from the other one b/c it doesn't give the option. It is greyed out as it is the only key installed.

The 20 licenses may have come with the core BES server. If you are turning off the other server, you should be able to do this fine. If you are not, you cannot remove the key from the first server as it would invalidate the actual BES license.

Meaning if the only license code he has enables both the BES and the 20 CALs and he removes it from the original BES to be legal, that would leave the original BES with no license code at all.

Ok; I wasn't sure how you came up with "it would invalidate the actual BES license".
