Default Can't send messages from hand held

Please Login to Remove!

I just noticed over the weekend that any attempt to reply or send a message from my blackberry results in an immediate failure (red x). I checked the BES logs on the server and nothing is there. Based on the fact that it happens immediately I'm thinking it never even tries to leave the BB. Any ideas on what I can check or reset on the BB to clear this problem?

Thanks,

Roveer

Found the problem. Looking at another post I decided to run the SetSendAsPermission.exe -a domain\BBServiceAccount -u useremailaddress command and that seems to have cleared things up. Hopefully it will stick. Here's a better description of what I did:

From another post:

"Blackberry set send as permission tool can be found here:

http://www.blackberry.com/DST2007/pa...Permission.exe

Save to c: and open Command Prompt and cd \

run just like this:

SetSendAsPermission.exe -a domain\BBServiceAccount -u useremailaddress

Eg: SetSendAsPermission.exe -a ACME\BEsadmin -u [email address]"

... Is your account a Domain Admin? or a member of any of the groups listed here: https://msmvps.com/blogs/ulfbsimonwe.../29/49659.aspx

I'm updating this thread because I rebooted the server 2 days ago and when trying to send a message from my blackberry today got the "red ex". I'm assuming that the permissions that I re-assigned using the utility didn't stick.

Your question about whether or not my BESAdmin user is a part of any of the groups in the post is positive. My BESAdmin account is a part of the "administrators" group. Is this why I keep loosing the send as priveledge? Groups the account is a member of:

Administrators
Domain Users
SERVERNAME servername.local/MyBusiness/Distribution Groups
Remove Web Workplace Users

Can I just remove the user from the Administrators group to fix this? Will this break BES on the server. I have to assume it needs some special priv's to do it's thing? I'm going to wait until I hear back on this tread before I pull the Admin group. I can re-run the utility as a short term fix, I could even put the utility in a server startup script so the send as would survive reboots, but I'd rather fix it the right way.

Besadmin is domain user only and does not/must not need/have any domain admin priveledges beside local computer administrators. Is BES running off SBS (judging by user group)?

After I left the last post I decided to re-run the setsendas utility figuring it would fix my problem. It ran with "success" to set the BESADmin acout to have send as permissions over my user account. Strangly this did NOT fix my problem. Still getting the red X when trying to send from the BB. Anything that happens on the outlook side does come down to the BB.

I looked in the BES logs on the server figuring I'd see an error, and even initiated several messages and the inspected the log files. There were NO entries in the logs for the failed messages. I'm going to make another post for this problem as it seems different than what I posted in this thread about. After I get things working again, I'll try removing the rights, leaving only those needed and see what happens.

BES software is running "ON" the SBS server. Very small company, limited resources. BES is only serving 1 user and not likely to climb beyond 2 or 3.

Still not able to send from BB. Log file reads as follows:

[40700] (07/07 15:58:54.626):{0x2234} {user@emaildomain.com} Receiving packet from device, size=109, TransactionId=2081944278, Tag=479, content type=CMIME, cmd=0x3
[30112] (07/07 15:58:54.626):{0x2234} {user@emaildomain.com} Receiving message from device, RefId=276560827, Tag=479, TransactionId=2081944278
[20265] (07/07 15:58:54.642):{0x2234} {user@emaildomain.com} MAPIMailbox::Send(ppMAPIMessage) - SubmitMessage (0x80070005) failed
[20472] (07/07 15:58:54.658):{0x2234} {user@emaildomain.com} Send() failed: ERR_SUBMIT_MAIL, Tag=479
[40277] (07/07 15:58:54.658):{0x2234} {user@emaildomain.com} Sending message error to device for message 276560827
[40583] (07/07 15:58:54.658):{0x2234} {user@emaildomain.com} Sending packet to device, Size=43, Tag=773, TransactionId=-932026152
[40279] (07/07 15:58:54.658):{0x2234} {user@emaildomain.com} SubmitToRelaySendQ, Tag=773

Which basically boils down to:

MAPIMailbox::Send(ppMAPIMessage) - SubmitMessage (0x80070005) failed
[20472] (07/07 15:58:54.658):{0x2234} {user@emaildomain.com} Send() failed: ERR_SUBMIT_MAIL, Tag=479

Please note, I changed the [email address] just for this post. In the real log it contains my email information.

I know when I set BES up a few weeks ago I was able to send from the BB but now I'm not. I even tried running the utility to set the rights. I even removed the user (erase data & disable handheld), but it asked a question about whether or not to remove the user from the email system. That sounded a little ominous so I answered no. I then re-added the user and re-activated on the BB. Still having the error.

Things to try?

Give these a review:
KB12789 - Check the BlackBerry Enterprise Server service account permissions on a BlackBerry smartphone user mailbox
KB02276 - Assigning permissions for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server service account
KB10823 - Verify the BlackBerry Enterprise Server administration account permissions

This is a permissions issue ...

Test 1 fails (kind of). The first test was to look in Exchange manager at who was the last access to the users message store. When sending from the BB the user never changes to the BES account and the red x appears and the error log indicates failure. BUT... If I put a calendar item on the BB calendar or open mail on the BB, the changes are reflected on the outlook client and the last access name in exchange manager DOES change to the BESAdmin account. So, does this mean that the rights are good?

Test 2, all rights appear as specified.

Test 3, slightly modified as I tried to follow the exact instructions for "creating a mail profile" but was unable. What I did do whas to go into TOOLS, EMAIL ACCOUNTS, VIEW OR CHANGE, MS EXCHANGE SERVER, CHANGE, MORE SETTINGS, ADVANCED, and added the BB user to the list (doing this all from the BESAdmin account). I then performed the 3 tests and they all suceeded.

What else can I look for?

The user that BES is serving ... is this user in any of the special groups?

He (I) was. I was set as a domain admin which I revoked on Monday.

I used BB's little slide show to set permissions and found that it wasn't quite appearing that it should. Not sure if it is because I'm a SBS 2003 or not, but what I did try was in AD Users & Computers under my user account, security, I defined the BESAdmin account, and under advanced, made sure "Send As" was selected and now I can send from the BB again.

Seeing that I'm no longer associated with any protected groups, I should survive a permissions cache update or reboot, but only time will tell. Since I'm such a small installation, I don't mind having to set this for any other future BB users so If it keeps working, I think I'm good to go!!!

Thanks everyone who posted and kept me going toward the eventual fix. Hopefully this will help someone else. I also read a post saying to do exactly this, but since I was in server manager did not see the "security" tab under my username. Still getting used to MS Server product.

How long should it take for a user to start being able to send e-mails once they are removed from the domain admins group?

I am having similar problems sending E-Mails from handhelds, I triple checked the "Send as"-permissions.

Only chance to get it running for a few hours is to run the SetSendAsPermission.exe. But still, it will only run for a few hours, after that it'll be broken again.

The Server is SBS2003 with exchange SP2 running.

Any further ideas, anyone?

This procedure from Microsofts KB 912918 seams to have the issue solved for me (for now, if the problem reoccurs I'll repost).

1. Start the Active Directory Users and Computers management console.
2. On the View menu, make sure that the Advanced Features option is selected. If this option is not selected, the Security page will not be visible for User account objects.
3. Open the properties of the user account that owns the mailbox.
4. Click the Security tab.
5. If the account is not already in the list of group or user names, add the account that should have the Send As permission for this user.
6. In the Permissions box, click Allow for the “Send As” permission for the appropriate account.
7. Click OK.
8. Restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service on the affected Exchange server.

I still had the issue as the AD kept forgetting that I gave send-as rights to the BESAdmin-user for the user account owning the BB-Device.

The following article got me on track and everything seams to be fine now:
articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-6180310.html - Modify Microsoft Exchange and restore Send As rights to your Blackberry users
