Default BlackBerry ResKit Syslog - 07-03-2008, 11:30 AM

I’m interested in knowing more about using BlackBerry Resource Kit Syslog to monitor the logs on the BES.

Per the directions it appears that I should setup a system separate from the BES.
  1. I need to install the Syslog service.
  2. Run a config tool to setup notifications and identify which logs and events to monitor.
  3. On the BES I need to edit the registry related to the individual BES services with the IP and Port of the syslog server.

Here’s my question….

Do I really need to use the BlackBerry Syslog services or can I use another system provided by our IT group to receive the syslog info from the BES? In which case instead of running the syslog services on a separate PC and editing the registry to point to that PC…I just edit the registry on the BES to point to our corporate Syslog server and have them configure the items to monitor and how to notify people.

Has anyone done this in this manner?
If you are doing it this way, is there any downside to this method?

Thanks.

You can use another syslog system to receive the syslog info. It is not necesary to use the one provided by RIM.

I didn't do it myself, but I was confirmed by RIM that using a third party syslog server is not a problem.

Thanks. I'll get with the other group, try it out and let you know how it goes.
