Exclamation Help!!! Know_It_All VP

Please Login to Remove!

I have the following scenario: (Running BES 4.1.4 Bundle 134 MS Exchg)

A VP missed an exec staff mtg becuz she "claims" it was not in the Outlook Calendar, but on her Blackberry. Please see following quote:

"We did not receive an invitation to the Executive Staff meeting via
Outlook, however, Lisa received the information on her Blackberry.
Since we only accept meeting invitations through Outlook, not
Blackberry, this is causing a problem."

Now, WE all know that's not possible, because the BB got it the same place outlook gets it. So the mtg WAS in outlook at some point. This is also not the 1st time this user has had these issues. She is a high-maintenance user, with no computer savy and likes to tinker.

I'm scheduled to meet with her & she wants to know WHY this happens and I can't quite tell her that it's user error. But for my own information/sanity how is it that the meeting that must have once been in the Outlook client and is gone, is still on the handheld. especially if reconciliation is on both server and handheld. Why didn't the handheld eventually sync up the removed mtg?

Thanks

Find out if it was a recurring meeting and this one instance was changed (via Outlook) or if it was a stand-alone meeting.

BES can do some weird stuff with recurring meetings.

Wow dude. Trying to research a cause/solution/presentation for you on BTSC, but not finding any.
Just flat out and say that the only way the entry can end up on the BlackBerry calendar is if it was in the Outlook calendar at some point. Heck, go back and check the Outlook logs (is there such a thing..?) and show where it appeared and was removed.

Outside of Blackberry I spent most of the time working with Admins and troubleshooting Outlook issues.

What version of Outlook?
Same Outlook version used within the group on the meeting?
Mailbox limit? User at or near limit?
Recurring meeting?
Free/Busy been cleaned?

Definitely look into the recurring meeting direction. Find out if the recurring meeting was changed at all (i.e. date/time). On the Blackberry check the Calendar Options and see if the Keep Appointments is set to Forever. If it is set to Forever then a recurring meeting that has been changed and then canceled will not get removed from the Blackberry Calendar but will get removed from the Outlook calendar. There is no work around for this problem. RIM told me they have this fixed in the the BB OS 4.5. I am trying to get OS 4.5 so I can test it.

We have this same problem where I work. You can explain that it is a bug in the Blackberry OS and will be fixed in 4.5 OS.

Googi ... this is possibly a BES issue ...

Calendaring / meeting requests has been IMO the biggest problem with BES 4.1.x

Default Consider everything

A while back I had an exec. who liked to play with his BB settings. His buddy (a BIS user) advised him that this Synchronization thing slows down his Blackberry so he should turn it off. So he went in to options on his Blackberry and turned if off for his calendar. Then he comes to me a week later screaming that our BES server isn't working properly and that he wasn't seeing meetings he accepted on his Blackberry showing up in Outlook. Turned his calendar back to Synchronize and no more issues. It may be as described by the others in this thread, but don't rule out the user (trouble is how to prove it, explain it, prevent it from re-occuring and still keep your job).

Good luck.

Goggi,

Have you been "given" a Blackberry of your own to try & replicate this issue? ... or is that "not possible" ... had to ask. Good luck!

I'm supporting ~15 users (so I'm told) ... so far only 1 on our BES, and am told I'm getting a BB device. We'll see!

Thanks Everyone!

We're an Outlook 2k3 / Exchange 2k3 shop, and yes, looks like this was / is a recurring mtg. To complicate things, she has an admin w/ delegate access to her mailbox. And of course when I went up to see her she didn't have time to remember all the details of the circumstance, but she sure has the time to complain that the BES doesn't work. I've just told her to try and log the details as best she can if / when it happens again.

But, on a more "technical" level, how / when is the BES notified that there's been an update to a meeting?

Beware of Outlook users going 'Rule crazy' too. I had someone complain of missing meetings in both directions and I found he had 27 different rules redirecting incoming email and meeting invites to different folders

The two big guys were in a meeting and my boss(one of the big guys) had me paged STAT to his office.
He demanded to know why emails were on his BB and not in outlook.

I looked at the Laptop and asked him to click on his inbox.

Now when he complains about some users I tell him, at least they can find the inbox.

Googi,

Tell all the parties involved that you are on it. You are personally monitoring ALL BlackBerry and Outlook activity to find the cause. Emails, Scheduling, etc. Once they feel the issue is resolved and they no longer have an issue you will quit monitoring.

BES knows the change based on the calendar event id and the agent see's the change.

I would strongly recommend the primary (manager) have the option in Outlook "Send all meeting requests only to my Delegate" enable.

This way the meeting requests are processed by one person and she doesn't accidently decline / delete from the Blackberry.
