Thumbs down Serious Issue! - All users have to reactivate

Please Login to Remove!

Our IT manager just set up a new virtual machine in VMWare ESX. I was charged with migrating the server from the physical box to the VM. I installed BES in the new VM but never setup the users and now for some reason the old server is acting up. All of a sudden users are not receiving their email or calendar notifications! I tried stopping all the services and the database on the new server but that does not resolve the problem.

Can anyone please provide some assistance?

Yes, during setup I used one of the keys from the old server. You think this is the problem?

You can't use the same SRP ID on 2 different machines (that are both connected to RIM's network at the same time). If you start up a 2nd box with an existing SRP ID, the SRP ID will get locked out by RIM.

Does the BES show that the SRP is running?

I will look. That is interesting though, I can re-activate a blackberry back onto the network....

Hilarious! Someone rebooted the VM and all the services started and SRP was connected on the new server as well. I just removed the key and SRP is now "Disconnected" on the new server. Do I need to contact RIM to unlock the SRP key, or what needs to be done to get these users back up and running without having to reactivate them all manually?

If you have 2 BES with the same key only one of them can be running at the same time.

Seeing as both your BES were doing this it sounds like you got it locked out. Contact RIM to fix it then set the services on one of the BES to manual so it doesn't happen again.

If the key is locked out, we can still re-activate the blackberries? Because we've re-activated like 50 at this point and they are now working OK.

So what your saying is, if we contact RIM, we will not have to re-activate the others?

I think you can have two SRPs connected at the same time now. but if you have 3 connected then it will fail.

That's the first I've heard of this... and frankly, I don't even see how it is technically possible to have the same SRP connected on more than one BES.

I think it has to do with the way HA is going to work in BES 5.0.

Test it out and let me know

You are not suppose to be able to run the same SRP on two servers. You have to stop the services on one and start the other. RIM will lock the SRp key. You will need to call RIM and have them unlock it. If you are using the same DB and same version of BES then you should not need to reactivate the BBs.

If you don't want to go through the hassle of setting up a new BES and the old one runs fine I would simply cold convert the old box to a VM using VMWare's free Converter utility instead of cutting over the database or reactivating users.

When we went from Physical to Virtual I did a knife edge cutover simply because the person who setup the original BES had screwed it up pretty good.

We have 8 Disaster Recovery BES installed with the 8 SRP keys of the production BES, and all the BB services set to manual on those DR BES. One of my team members panicked over the weekend because a VIP had a BB problem and he started all those services manually. I came in Monday morning and freaked when I saw the SRP status in Blackberry Manager cycling through unknown, connected, disconnected, etc. Bottom line though, all the BES continued to forward data packets and none of the SRPs got locked out.
