Default Does enterprise activation wipe out existing contacts

Please Login to Remove!

Our new CFO came to me with his blackberry that he's been using at another company, full of contacts, and wanted to be synced with our BES. In the past, every blackberry that I've ever set up has been new from the box, with nothing on it. I'm a little apprehensive about doing the activation, and since everything is over a wireless sync... the unit syncing with his empty outlook contacts, and wiping everything out.

I know I can back up the unit, then do the activation, and restore contacts if need be, but he's not around so it's going to delay the activation further. Can anyone tell me if the contacts would be purged? Or would it be visa versa and all the contacts from the unit, get added to his outlook personal contacts file?

It's been a while, but I think it might, unless you tell the handheld to override the server.

You could also just do a wired PIM sync with Outlook and the handheld through Desktop Manager and populate the Address Book only to Outlook. I'd say, to be on the safe side, to synchronize to Outlook first then enterprise activate and let it sync wirelessly.

In my expirience (Running on Domino with iNotes users setup) it does not overwrite existing entries. It will sync what you already have on the bb back to your personal address book in Notes and then just incorporate all your other entries from your Notes personal address book over to the blackberry.

conwawj: I know it will do that if you add in entries AFTER activation, but I think on one or two we've tried it might have wiped them out if they were in there before activation. I might have to go back and try this again to check

It's been a while. I'll test it again as well. Thanks for keeping me honest.

just to clear up this post. I completed the activation on the unit, and it kept all the contacts on the unit, and successfully replicated all of his contacts within outlook, which was great.

Virtually all our BBs were on BIS first, and virtually all users had created contacts. All had their BB contacts replicated to Exchange upon OTA activation with BES 4.0/Exchange.

Only exception is where a BB just plain won't activate...if you have to kill it to activate it, of course, the contacts will disappear unless you back them up first.
