we've been upgrading the 80-some blackberries that our sales force use, and we're finding that the backup and restore of data is taking a considerable amount of time purely due to the call logs and that removing them from the devices doesn't seem to stop them from being a part of this process - are these - or any trace of them - stored on the BES server?

We've tried removing them from the devices via ALT P, and deleting anything prior to a certain date but they seem to come back again. This is particularly an issue on our CEO's bb, where he has 8000+ call logs.

Call logs are not stored on the BES.
Maybe try viewing the call logs folder and deleting that way...sounds odd.

Backup and Restore > Advanced > select Phone Call Logs from the right > click Clear

Yes they are...on 4.0 definitley (during the wireless backup). Try an enterprise activation for an existing device and see what happens.

the phone call logs are definitely stored in the sql database on the BES. stevew is right. do an OTA for a user that was previously on 4.0 hh code and if that user was a heavy phone user, the activation will take freakin forever. I have seen users with over 6000 call logs and during the activation you can scroll down and see the progress it is making. On this particular user it took over 8 hours to finish the OTA because of how many call logs there were.

Now Tbushell, there is a way to delete them so that when you do an activation they will not restore... but it isn't too viable. You would have to do what you already suggested about doing a delete prior but the key would be that you would need to wait probably up to a day before it fully synced back to the BES and to tell the BES that your phone logs had been removed. Really sucks. I brought this up to RIM at the last mini WES that I was at. Haven't heard back yet. Please if anyone knows a better work around, let us knowl.
