Default BES Exchange - Attachment Problem

Please Login to Remove!

Hello
I could not find a solution for this in the forums.

I run BES 4.1.6.16 and Exchange 2007 servers. On our Nextel Blackberry Curve 8351i phones, emails with attachments arrive, then change to a "?" question mark. For example, if I receive a PDF attachment, I can see the small PDF icon for a brief moment, then it changes to a question mark. This happens with all attachment types such as MS Office documents and audio files.

If I receive an email via the Sprint/Nextel personal email account setup (hotmail), or access email via the browser (yahoo) I can send, receive, view attachments (via the installed "Documents to go" software) just fine.

I've reviewed several Blackberry support articles, including re-registering the attachment distiller DLLs, restarting the attachment service, increasing the attachment file size limits, etc. The attachment service is installed and seems to be functioning properly.

I'd appreciate any assistance, thanks!

I would install the the attachment service on a seperate box, then point the BES to the new attachment server.

I found a Partial solution

All of the attachment types were separated by colon ":" by default in the Blackberry Server Configuration. I changed to semicolon ";" - this allowed my BB to view MS office file attachments (via Documents to Go v1.006.051) and .WAV file attachments via the internal media player.

I am still unable to view PDF attachments sent to the corporate BES email. I can download the attachment to flash, however I still cannot open it. "This attachment type cannot be viewed on your device"

If the same attachment is sent via personal email (hotmail), it opens fine- no error message.

Problem solved! Troubleshooting steps below.

1. On the BES server, Open Blackberry Server Configuration
- Select the attachment server tab, then Configuration Option: connector configuration, remove PDF
- Select Configuration Option: Attachment Server, uncheck PDF
- Click OK
2. Restart the Blackberry Dispatcher Service, Restart the Blackbery Attachment Service
3. Open Blackberry Server Configuration
- Select the attachment server tab, then Configuration Option: connector configuration,
- Delete all current file extensions
- add the following file extensions: exactly as below (note: PDF is listed twice)

Code:
pdf:pdf;doc;dot;xls;ppt;pps;wpd;zip;txt;htm;html;bmp;jpg;jpeg;gif;png;tif;tiff;wav;wmf;rtf;docx;dotx;xlsx;pptx;ppsx;amr

- Select Configuration Option: Attachment Server, check PDF
- Change all MAX file size limits to 2048 (2MB)
- Click OK
4. Restart the Blackberry Dispatcher Service, Restart the Blackbery Attachment Service
5. Send yourself a test PDF

Anyone know what an AMR file is?

That's an audio format used by the voice recorder on the BB devices.

That can't be the ultimate solution. It is ok if it works for you, but we have a column as separator ( and pdf only listed once and everything works as expected. So probably something else must be wrong in your config?

I agree the solution looks screwy, but it works. As I mentioned in the thread, the colon separator is the default setting, but for whatever reason, using the line exactly as listed in my last post works (combo of colons and semi-colons) for the 8350i Curves.

Default .pdf attachments

Using the line exactly as listed in the last post works (combo of colons and semi-colons) for the Bold9000 BES on Lotus Domino
