I'd like to know how BES communicates with Exchange.

Does BES "poll" Exchange? If it does, how often is this polling?

Or does Exchange send out a notification to BES? How does it do this?

it uses mapi and polls exchange alot. Also exchange send BES info a message is recieved and then BES picks it up.

Think of each BES user 3.7 exchange users, its like some one pressing send recieve evey second 24 7 365.

Exchange is a true client server app, the client (in this case BES) registers itself with the Exchange server for new mail notifications. when a new message arrives in the mailbox the client is notified and the client then retrieves the message.
