Default Server Migration + Upgrade Questions

Please Login to Remove!

Hey all,

I am in the process of trying to figure out how to upgrade our BES server. Full disclosure: This is my first BES admin experience and I'm learning as I go along.

The setup we currently have is BES 3.6.5 w/ MSDE running on Win2k and Exchange 2k3. What we want to do is move everyone (30 users) over to a temporary server while we rebuild the 2k server into a 2k3 server running BES 4.1.2, then move everyone back to the rebuilt server.

Here are two problems: I'd prefer to do this without first upgrading the BES version on the existing server. I also do not have the install media for BES 3.6 handy. I know that the 3.6.5 database is not compatible with 4; is there any way we can do this and just create a new database? I don't mind having the users re-activate (although I'd rather not have to wipe each Blackberry). We'd prefer not to upgrade the existing server in case something goes wrong in the transfer to the temporary one.

Thanks in advance -- any help is appreciated (especially if I'm presupposing something that I shouldn't be).

Upgrading the CALs will be the tough part, the upgrade usually does it.

A call into RIM might get your CAL's transfered, so you can do what you want.
They are usually nice about it.

I wonder if I'm not looking at this the wrong way -- can I just do this like a clean install of 4.1.6, even if it is on a different machine?

If I export the user list, use the same SRP ID + auth key, use the same BES service account & mailbox and keep the BES server name the same, would I be okay? And can I just add the CALs as if it was the first time?

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

I told you my answer and it will knot change.

But try as you may and let us know if it worked or knot.

I am thinking knot, but you could prove me wrong.
