Default BES - Different Carriers

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

I'm hoping that someone can advise me please.

We've recently invested in 5 Bold 9000 Blackberrys on the UK O2 Network.

As part of this purchase we also invested (via O2) in a 20 User license for BES (Lotus Domino).

Our Italian office is now interested in getting some Blackberry units. If they got some Blackberry units from their local Italian carrier (non O2) can I register them against our existing BES server - making use of some of the 15 remaining licenses?.

I suppose what I'm trying to work out is whether the Blackberry service is tied into the carrier in some fashion?.

Thanks

Iain

I don't believe the license is tied to the carrier. You should be able to activate any phone on your BES provided you have enough license and the device is provisioned correctly (having the right data plan to allow connection to the BES)

Yes

No, it is not. 20 CALs allows you to connect 20 BBs to 20 BES accounts. The BES server does not care which model of BB devices, or which carrier, or where they are in the world.

The only issue that you *might* have is due to system config. If the Italian users have a local mail server, and it is a slow connection to the BES in the UK, you might have operational issues. However, this would not be an issue if you have a good connection speed between servers and/or the Italian users' mailserver is local to the BES.

No problem. Just think of o2 as a reseller of RIM software. If you buy your BES server and/or upgrades and/or CALs via them, it makes no odds. They are RIM products, not recoded or changed by o2, and will work the same regardless of whether o2 is your carrier, or whether you change.

Obviously o2 handhelds ARE locked to o2 by default, but we all know the BB devices are a different kettle of fish.
Software and CALs are generic, regardless of reseller. OK, well not TOTALLY generic, a Domino BES won't work with Exchange etc., but you get the point here
