Default Multiple address book - issue - 05-04-2009, 01:59 PM

Hello,

BES 4.1.5
Domino 6.5

Device software 4.5+ has been nothing but a headache for me when it comes to address books. I routinely get multiple "DESKTOP" under the address book depending on if the user is set for wireless sync or desktop manager but RIM has provided no clear explanation on how to avoid this or correct it. Wiping the device helps but I would appreciate a clear explanation. I never ran into this issue on 4.2.

So far what I've seen...

Bes profile
- set address book server and path to mailfile
this results in one DESKTOP entry with wireless sync set to YES

- if i go back to the BB profile and set wireless sync to FALSE on the BES
two DESKTOP show up on device with NOT AVAILABLE

There are many different scenarios all of which unfortunately cause headaches. I wish I could just shut off the multiple address book option as it does not serve any purpose in our environment.

Please post any experiences.

Thanks

I think the concept is good but there is not guideline from RIM on how to use it.

IMHO the best way to do wireless address book syncrhonization is with Domino 8. With the Lotus Notes 8 client you can open the iNotes address book without using iNotes.

Anyone else?

I'm surprised noone else is seeing this issue, perhaps i'm the only one using iNotes (Domino Web Access) to allow users to wirelessly sync.

We're not using Domino Web Access so I haven't uncovered this issue.

On a side note, currently the Desktop SYNC service book is out main source of grief at the moment (intermittently after about 3-12 months, a handheld with a large adddress book (1200-6000 contacts) will loose the ability to propegate address book changes back to the server). RIM's suggestion is to delete the local Desktop SYNC service book on the device(s) in question, then push down new service books.

We have Lotus Notes 7 here. I got 2 address books after switching to a new device. Had duplicate entries because of 2 address books called "Desktop". I found a solution to remove my duplicates:
- Hit the Menu key and choose "Select Address Book"
- Pick the old one that is not being synced
- Again hit menu key and choose Options
- While in Address Book Options type in all capitals RSET
- This will give you the choice to delete the address book contents.

After doing this I still have 2 address books, but one is empty.

Yeah, i'm trying to remove the address book completely though. It appears as though the only way is to wipe the device unfortunately.

4.5+ is definitely buggy when it comes to the "feature" of multiple address books or calendars.

Default copy all entries from one address book to another - 11-07-2009, 04:37 PM

Is there a way to copy all entries from one address book to another?

From reasons that I'm not sure about, I have 3(!!!) address books on my pearl. Two are called "Desktop" and one "Unkonwn". One of the "Desktop" (which has very few contacts) can be Wireless sycned, while the 2 others have "Not Available" in their "Wireless Synchronization" field. I'm not sure how long I'm leaving like this, but I found out that most of the contacts are not sycned with Notes, and that I'm unable to sync with Desktop Manager as it claims that Address Book are wireless sync (even when non of the 3 is). I am able to backup using DM.

I've tried to wipe the device which ended with one "healthy" address book which contained only a subset of the contacts. Trying to restore from a backup ended up back to the starting point.

Any thoughts on how to get rid of the additional address books? And before that copy all their entries to a good address book (or to Notes)?

Thanks,
Beery

Same issue. This "feature" is a hot mess. I opened a ticket with RIM today, we'll see what the official word is.
