Default 2 exchange ad servers only one able to add users - 11-16-2005, 05:01 PM

We have two exchange servers (both 2k3 on 2k3 server) ONe is located in the UK and is a DC. he other is here in the states and is not a DC.

The BES is setup in the UK and the MAPI profile points to the UK server and a mailbox on that server. Both servers are under the same domain.

When I try and add a UK user it allows me with no problems.

When I try to add a US user I get the message "User bl bla bla cannot be added because the mailbox may have been deleted "

I have tried using IEMSTest and that shows the same info (UK is able to setup US is not)

Any assistance (and please feel free to put this in as simple an instruction as possible) would be great!!

Thanks in advance

If you ran the IEMSTEST...then the results should have indicated that it was not able to write to or create a temp folder in the specified user's mailbox. That would imply a permissions problem for the BES service acct at either the Exch server level..mailbox level
Compare the security settings (you can use the ESM on the exch svr) for the acct on both servers.

When you say ESM on both servers what are you refrencing. Do I need to setup a local account on the exchange sever for the besadmin account? Dont htink this will work since the one exchg server is a dc and cannot add local users.

The single BES service account that you're currently using does not seem to have the same permissions on the US exchange mailboxes as it does on the UK mailboxes. My reference was to use the Exchange System Manager to check the permissions of the service account on either the exchange servers themselves, or check the permissions at the mailbox level on the respective servers.
If it's one BES server, one domain, one service acct and two Exchange servers (same domain)....then IMO its a permission issue unless proven otherwise. Hence the need for a thorough comparison between the servers.

Sorry if I am being thick here but...

In exchange manager under administrative groups we have two sites (uk and US) under that we have our servers, system policy, and routing groupes.

I find the besadmin account under the UK side. But I dont see any permissions attached to it here.

On a side note: We are currently in mixed mode. We do still have our 5.5 exchange server online with some non migrated accounts. I am able to add a user from 5.5 but not from exchange2k3 server.

Does that help at all?

thanks again

No need to apologize....
If you're using Ex5.5 and Ex2003 (mixed mode)...then the directory services are different for both servers. Ex5.5 has it's own directory service which is local and Ex2003 uses AD. By default Ex5.5 director service cannot communicate with AD and Exchange2003.
Exchange Server 2003 Active Directory Connector (ADC) is used to allow communication and synchronization between the Exchange Server 5.5 directory and Active Directory.
The ADC synchronizes current mailbox, custom recipient, public folder, and distribution list information from the Exchange Server 5.5 directory to Active Directory user accounts and groups, thereby eliminating the need for re-entering this data in Active Directory
