Default Physically move a BES server

Please Login to Remove!

Hello!
I am in the middle (!) of moving a shed load of servers to our brand spanking new co-location data centre. One of the servers in question is of course BES. This server dedicated to BES and nothing else. There are VPNs between the co-loco network and all the related offices. I am using the mighty Domino 7.0.2.

My Plan is as follows:

1. Drive to this particular office where BES is currently located.
2. Frantically ring round all the users and inform them that it is being turned off.
3. Pull it out the Rack.
4. Get lost in London as my SatNav hasn’t been updated since 2005.
5. Insert server in to rack
6. Edit Connection Documents
7. *pray*
8. Grab a Mc'y D's on the way home, turning mobile phone off to avoid angry users.
9. Read up of IT Project Management.

In the past I have heard of people mention the possibility of the SRP being disconnected when RIM detect a new external IP address. Is this correct? Do I need to speak to RIM to prevent this from happening? Or has anyone else done anything similar? Or does that only happen if RIM detect duplicate SRPs being use?

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.
Kind regards,
Dave

How about sending them an email the day before telling them their email services will be offline during the move? Then you can avoid this step. Give them a time frame they will be down and any work around (such as using their PC for email instead).

The SRP disconnect happens if RIM detects a duplicate SRP.

Do you have T-Support?

Plan it carefully.. Note any changes (IP address changes etc, have everything prepped before hand to minimize downtime so all you have to at the site is start it up)

Sending out a mass Pin/Email from the Manager would be helpful..

Has the firewall been configured in the site?

May want to update your GPS

Make sure it is really working before you do turn off your phone though.

Hi juwaack68,

Apologies - that step was an attempt at humour!

I do not have T-Support. What is that? So you think I am safe to go ahead under the assumption that I can move the server without any "SRP dissconnected" pain?

Thank you for you help.
Kind regards,

No worries on the SRP - our network fails over to a secondary provider at least once a month. It's kind of funny actually - our Syslog server catches the failover and notifies us after BES has disconnected and reconnected with notifications

Hello all!

Thanks for the reassurance! The server was moved and connected back up without issue

I am not sure if it is related or not, but I am trying to activate another Backberry and normally this is easy and never fails. Howerver this Blackberry Bold after a while says "server not responding". I can see the e-mail from RIM hitting the users inbox and dissappearing again. Problem is that this user is in Mexico! They have GPRS signal and can browse the web. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I havent needed to in the past and didnt at the old location, but is it possible I need to open a port up on the firewall?

Kind regards,
Dave.

from memory as long as the bes can make an outbound connection to rim on 3101 you should be fine, but i suppose you could always try opening it and see if it makes any difference.

if the .etp is leaving the mailbox it sounds like it either is being found by bes and doing something then failing or maybe some kind of filter on his mailbox or mail client is moving it as it comes in.

Anything useful in your BES's logs?

edit: just a thought, my curve 8900 on 4.6 asks for activation address, i assume user is using the new correct address?

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO THERE IS NO NEED TO EVER OPEN UP PORT 3101 INBOUND FOR BES ... EVER!!!!

If it is asking for a server address that is for Wi-Fi activations ... it has nothing to do with a standard EA over a carrier's wireless network.

Can you send the user a PIN message successfully? I know you say the EA email is going to the mailbox, but take a step back and make sure PIN communication is working properly too.

Hi hdawg,

As you say, I opened the ports and it made no differance!

So the .etp is coming in (I can see it in the Barracuda) and it is leaving the inbox. I have set Trend to ignore .EPT files. The other users on BES are working fine. The user has BES provisioning enabled, is in a 3G area and can browse the web on the phone. What on earth is stopping the activation?! Always says "server not responding".

Kind regards,
Dave

Even though I asked them 500 times (by phone, e-mail, fax and carrier pigeon) to check and get BES setup on their account that they haven't. What a waste of time!
