Default Moving to new BPS

Please Login to Remove!

I need to redeploy BPS on a new machine but theres some things I don't know and I'm hoping you can help.

How do the blackberries bypass the firewall to connect to the bps server? I don't remember configuring the firewall to forward certain ports so how does that work?

The reason why I'm asking is because when I have the new server up and ready to go, I would like to know how to configure the blackberries to work with the new server and I don't want them connecting to the old.

You need to open port 3101 in the firewall (unless already open) and direct to your BES Server. You can do an SRP connection test to test everything is working.

The actual BlackBerries dont connect to your site. They connect to the BlackBerry gateway and as long as your SRP is connected, it will all work fine.

Re: the new server and old server. As long as the old server has SRP status: disconnected and the new one has SRP server connected, the BBs won't communicate with the old server.

Note: Please make sure that both servers dont have SRPs connected at the same time. If they do, it will cause your SRP being locked by RIM

Incorrect. You don't need to open any inbound ports whatsoever.
BES only needs outbound-initiated bidirectional traffic on port 3101.

crap-ok, the services are disabled on the new server. Thanks for that extra information!

Is it possible to move the SQL database from the old server to the new server even if it is a new active directory?

Please understand the basic concepts of BlackBerry security before you start giving others advice that is totally incorrect. Also it isn't BlackBerries ... the plural of BlackBerry is BlackBerry handhelds.

Thankfully someone stepped in right away.

Yes. Read: KB03112 - How to move the BESMgmt Database to a new SQL Server or instance

When trying to correct others, a piece of advice, please don't make errors yourself.

It should not be "plural of BlackBerry is is BlackBerry handhelds" it should be "plural of BlackBerry is BlackBerry handhelds."

All I am trying to imply is:

1. You could have been a bit less rude about the way you said what you said. I appreciate what you were saying is correct.

2. The idea was to get the message across. Whether I said "BlackBerries"/BBs/BlackBerry handhelds, the message conveyed would still have been the same.

Voda_black: Thank you for your help! I do agree that was a bit rude.

hdawg: If you have a problem with someone, pm them but you don't have to make it public. I understand that it was a mistake but it was a small one that wouldn't have created an issue in the end.

PS- I call them blackberries even if thats not completely correct

Good point; I've I've removed the duplicate ... but see ... there again I did another duplicate ... but it doesn't really matter does it. I've made a grammatical mistake which didn't detract from the technically proper information that I posted.

That said, the information you posted was not only incorrect, but you provided information that would have made the OP's infrastructure less secure. If you spell banana bannana, I'll correct you nicely ... when you provide such egregious information you'll get a different reaction out of me.

Yeah I could have ... and you could have checked your facts before insinuating that you might know something about how BPS actually works.

You're absolutely right on point #2. You were still incorrect with your usage of the word, but more importantly I was focused on the tcp port 3101 issue. The fact that you also don't know the plural of BlackBerry was just an add-on.
