Default Issue with sending email from handheld - 11-30-2005, 12:53 AM

Hi group. First time poster and new BES Admin here. I have a 27 users using model 6750's on BES 4.0 on MS Exchange.

Here's the skinny:

Our shuttle/limousine operation has 27 model 6750's assigned to vehicles (vans, cars, limos, etc). Our dispatchers and reservation agents use a software package for reservation booking and dispatching. Part of this
software, the dispatch end, has the ability to send and receive text
messages (to send trip info to the drivers, that sort of thing). We
did have text-message-enabled cell phones for that purpose, but
decided to give the blackberries a go since there would be no
character-limit restriction as there is w/ the cell phones.

When a message is sent to the handheld, it is received fairly quickly,
BUT the driver cannot just hit reply to acknowledge receipt of the
message to the dispatcher. Instead they have to compose a new email,
and then it is received by the dispatcher correctly. And even THAT is starting to go hinky on us. The reply option, and now even the new message options end up sending something like this:

(23) Email body received: bytes: 480
PCFET0NUWVBFIEhUTUwgUFVCTElDICItLy9XM0MvL0RURCBIVE 1MIDMuMi8vRU4iPg0KPEhUTUw+DQo8SEVBRD4NCjxNRVRBIEhU VFAtRVFVSVY9IkNvbnRlbnQtVHlwZSIgQ09OVEVOVD0idGV4dC 9odG1sOyBjaGFyc2V0PXV0Zi04Ij4NCjxNRVRBIE5BTUU9Ikdl bmVyYXRvciIgQ09OVEVOVD0iTVMgRXhjaGFuZ2UgU2VydmVyIH ZlcnNpb24gNi4wLjYyNDkuMSI+DQo8VElUTEU+PC9USVRMRT4N CjwvSEVBRD4NCjxCT0RZPg0KPCEtLSBDb252ZXJ0ZWQgZnJvbS B0ZXh0L3BsYWluIGZvcm1hdCAtLT4N

This was taken from our software's log. It looks to be some kind of
mime formatting? (am I saying that right?). Don't know why it does
that. If the handheld is used to send an email to someone sitting at
their desk w/ their outlook open, the email is received fine 100% of
the time and says it was sent in plain text format.

Very confusing (hope I didn't just make it moreso . Any ideas, feel

This is because the BlackBerry uses Unicode and it is not formatted properly when in Plain Text. There is an incompatibility somewhere here. Would kinda need to diagram or have a detailed flow of the message. You might need to upgrade your BES or tweak the dispatcher program to use Unicode. Here are some documents that should give you more information on the issue. Hope this helps!!
