Default Wav files and BES 4.0.3 - 11-30-2005, 10:16 AM

BES 4.0.3 has a .wav distiller in the attachment service. It is not enabled in the format extension list by default. Has anyone tried adding it and see if the 8700 can listen to wav files?

my BES is 4.0.3 and I have 8700. I tried sending the 90k and 200k wav files to my blackberry 8700 and it showed as attachment, but no option where I can open the attachments like I could with docs, jpegs, etc. Suggestions?

Did you add .wav in the format extension list? Restart of the Dispatcher would also be required.

I added the .wav extension to the list on my BES server and restarted all of my services on the BB server (We have this in house). The attachment came through and from the menu, whilst in the email, I was able to select "Open attachment" however, it errored out and said that it was an unrecognized file type/format.

Thanks.

Cool feature! So, does this work on 7100 model? I added it and I get the wav as application at the bottom of the email, but I can't "Open attachment"

wav files are not supported on the 7100, so no. this would work with the 7130e and 8700c/r only right now.

it appears that the 8700 only supports 32khz wave files (16-bit mono). most wave files from various voicemail delivery systems are downsampled to 8khz (16-bit mono). if the BES cannot upsample the wave files, then thats a huge mistake on their part to limit it to 32khz, in my opinion - a rather stupid mistake.

a 120kb at 32khz gives approximately 2 seconds worth of audio.

any RIM employees reading this care to send this observation up the pipeline?

Same issue here. I'm guessing that 'support' is offered with 4.0.3, but 'functionality' is not built in just yet. I still am questioning the implementation of the file sizes versus minimum sample rate - its ridiculous, and its going to be a MAJOR headache come BES 4.0.4 or 4.1, assuming its functional at that time.

Default 8700 playing wav issue - 12-11-2005, 11:19 PM

I am also having the unrecognized document format error displayed when trying to play a wav attachment. I opened a trouble tickect on RIMs TSupport site and will keep the thread updated with RIMs response. Hopefully I will get some answers in the next day or so.

I spoke with RIM technical support today and was told at this time playing wav attachments is not supported on BES 4.0.3 or BB 8700 (4.1.0.194). The rep also said she anticipated this feature being functional in the 4.1 release of the BES software. The rep also said that the feature should work on other devices beside the 8700.

Default 8700 can listen to .wav - 01-06-2006, 11:37 AM

Holy Moleys,

My partners 8700r can listen to .wav files. We subscribe to a telephone service that send messages as urled .wav files. He can listen to them no problem with BB audio player.

Although we are on the same bb version and same BES server my 8700R gets a "file too large error"

Anyone have wisdom on why this message would pop up even though I have lots of free RAM.

I gotta get this working on mine ..... im green.

Thanks a ton,

Mark

Default It works! - 01-06-2006, 01:03 PM

I made a shorter recording (turned out to be 91 Kb) and it works!

Clear as day ... automatically through the external speaker

Finally VOIP email messages ...... I can hear them.

Default Yes, VM wav working with 8700c - 01-12-2006, 12:13 PM

Here's our setup:

Voicemail is run with NCH's IVM answering attendant software, which sends an email notification and also posts a wav file to a web directory and updates the message list (with links) on a web page for each new call that comes in.

When I get the email on the 8700c I can then go to the web page and click on the new VM's link. The wav file plays, just as the above post mentions, with no problems through the external speaker.

I tested it first with a very short message, then with a very long one, and after some general trial and error, can report this much:

The long message (a minute and a half) was too big. The file size was over 700k, and I got an error message. I reduced the cutoff on the vm software to 1 minute, ended up with a 470k wav file, and that plays fine. So one minute it is.

In terms of compression, the VM software is set to PCM format, with attributes: 8.00 kHz, 8 bit, Mono (7 kb/sec). As I said, the wav files generated that way do play from the web page link on the 8700c.

Sure, it would be easier just to get them to play as email attachments, but this is better than nothing.

I can't believe that nobody has come up with a program that uses the native Browser-based wav player on the 8700c.

This is nuts. Does anyone know of a solution allowing us to play WAV attachments yet?

Regards

I just received a great link from RIM about the supported files for certain BB types.

What Is - Supported audio formats
Last Updated: 10 March 2006
Article Number: DB-00497
Summary

This article applies to the following:

* BlackBerry® Device Software 4.1
* BlackBerry Java™ Development Environment (JDE) 4.1

Description

The supported audio formats on the BlackBerry wireless devices are the following:

BlackBerry 8700 Series of wireless handhelds AMR MIDI MP3 WAV
BlackBerry 7100i™ MIDI WAV
BlackBerry 7130e™ MIDI MP3
BlackBerry 7100 Series of wireless handhelds MIDI ADPCM
BlackBerry 6200 Series of wireless handhelds partial MIDI
BlackBerry 6700 Series of wireless handhelds partial MIDI
BlackBerry 7200 Series of wireless handhelds partial MIDI
BlackBerry 7700 Series of wireless handhelds partial MIDI

Additional Information

AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate): The supported AMR-NB rates are 4.75 KBps, 5.15 KBps, 5.9 KBps, 6.7 KBps, 7.4 KBps, 7.95 KBps, 10.2 KBps, and 12.2 KBps; and the input must conform to RFC3267 Section 5 on the Internet FAQ Archive web site.

MIDI: Partial support of MIDI on older devices refers to a buzzer capable of buzzing at various frequencies and volumes. All other devices support polyphonic MIDI.

MP3: Currently, the supported format is MPEG-1 Layer 3; the supported sample rates are 32KHz, 44.1KHz, and 48KHz; and the supported channels are 1 (mono) and 2 (stereo).

ADPCM2: This is a proprietary sampled audio format.

WAV: The supported encodings include PCM, uLaw, and aLaw. The supported sampling rates are 8 kHz, 16 kHz, 22.05 kHz, 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, and 48 kHz with 8-bit and 16-bit depths in mono or stereo.

It states that only 7100i handhelds can play WAV files, no other 7100 series can

Also, the entire 8700 family should be able to play WAV files.

I wonder if the 7100 not being able to play them is something they can rectify with a software upgrade in the future?

Default Sdr86340 - 05-26-2006, 04:43 PM

Running BES 4.1 on Domino 6.5.4 I still received the "Unrecognized document format" when attempting to open a .wav attachment.

RIM support response:

Advised that Wave Attachments will not be processed by the 4.1 BlackBerry Enterprise Server Attachment Service due to a known issue. Advised of SDR86340, which relates to this issue and is indicative of a resolution in a future release of a service pack for the 4.1 BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

He also indicated that 4.1 sp1 for Domino will be out in the next few weeks although he could not comment for certain if this SDR would be addressed in that release.

At least we know they are working on it.

It's in Blackberry Server Configuration (on GW BES this is via the Start-->Programs-->Blackberry Enterprise Server --> ) on the Attachment server tab - from Config Option drop down list ensure 'Connector Configuration' is selected; you'll see a list of supported file extensions on this page, add the extension you need to the list. You can enable a file distiller and max file size by changing the drop down option to 'Attachment server'.

Check the Blackberry Server help file for file extensions for step by step instructions if you need more info.
