Any version of the BlackBerry OS can be use on any version of BES.

Almost true.

Any version of the BlackBerry OS that supports the encryption method used on the version of BES is supported. Older devices that only support 3DES will not work on servers that only support AES.

For example: GroupWise only supports AES
