Default Handheldcleanup tool + Exchange 2007 SP1

Please Login to Remove!

Hey all .. been awhile since I've been around. Been just crazy with projects / Company Re-Org.

Anyways we put out first Ex2007 cluster in the past week and we just moved our first group on mailboxes to this environment. I have read the KB on moving from Ex2003 --> Ex2007 but the BES service account is staying in Ex2003 (should it?) as we will likely be in a mixed mode 2003 / 2007 for another year.

So mailboxes move fine, ran handheldcleanup on BES and it noted the moves. BES manager shows the proper mailbox server for the user but the event log was showing a bunch of errors related to failing to update the table. Attempting to test the BB and it fails to send.

Now I know BB with 2007 was working as we did the powershell commands, user accounts have the service account, devices activated and function so unsure why these users move broke their BB?

After rebooting the BES the devices starting working so the full rescan likely corrected whatever connection was broke. My question is I thought that was the purpose of HHC utility?

If I've overlooked something and insight would be helpful before we move a larger mailbox group.

TIA!

You shouldn't have had errors with people sending if the handheldcleanup worked properly.

That said, how long did you wait after running HHC before attempting to send ... and how long after that before rebooting.

HHC is supposed to do just what you thought it would do. Update address info within BES so it knows you're on a different mail server ... updating its own cache. The reboot flushes the cache and sees the users mailbox in the new location anyway.

Waited maybe an hour. I'll try it again today and run the HHC and then wait longer if that is a case. Likely the reboot picked up the change quicker due to the full rescan.

I guess my concern is does HHC recognize a move to Exch2007 different then a Exch2003 store to store move?

Ok further info as I'm testing this with a spare account.

Account was in 2003 and working fine with BB.
Moved mailbox to 2007
15 mins later ran HHC - query noted move. BES account shows new 2007 MB server
Device can lookup but sending fails with this error:
"Email Program unable to store message"
Device is also not receiving email tests.

It's now going on 2 hours .. will this resume after the next BES rescan or will I have to stop and restart a service / reboot BES?

SOLVED: To close this out for anyone in the future:

The user account on the BES either needs to be reloaded or the BES rebooted to resolve this behavior.

Sorry .. To explain.

HHC will work if the move is in the same Exch org. Since this move was Exch2003 org to Exch2007 org.

HHC while it notes the move, will not regain BB functionality. You have to either reload the user or reboot the BES.

Reload would be ideal for small moves but seeing I have groups of 100 users per night it's easier to just bounce the BES after each move.
