Default ESX3.5 BES VM and wired activations - 11-05-2009, 12:53 PM

Hi again all

Itching to get finished building my BES 5 environment but Design document being requested ho hum.
Had a thought though in meantime.

If wireless activation fails, and it is possible, I would need to perform a wired activation. Problem I foresee is this:
1)The BES is in a Email\Collabroation domain that has no physical desktops (Though i do have a VM desktop on it which I RDP onto).
2)My personal desktop is not on this Domain and is also not part of a domain (as with all PC's)

How do I perform a wired activation?
I can RDP onto this domain from my box because I've configured my firewall to allow this, but how do I get a wired activation to work from a non-domain PC to a Virtual BES in a remote Domain?

Do I need a USB hub (or something like this) or will Web Desktop Manager work if I publish the URL to my non-domain PC. Any hints or tips in advance of having to try and figure this out would be most helpful

Tom

You'd do a wired activation using Web Desktop Manager on any workstation with Internet Explorer and a USB port. (Workstation needs to be able to reach the server hosting WDM, of course.)

I've never been a fan of wired activations.
If the wireless activation fails, then that's a good indicator that there's some issue you need to resolve.
It's both a troubleshooting step, and an activation at the same time.

Thanks chap

In my previous employ, where they had about a 30% wireless activations failure rate, they didn't go much further than to plug into server\desktop and activate wired.

My belief is that in almost all of the cases it will be an issue either with the
1)smartphone OS version,
2)maybe some other problem on smartphone that could be fixed by a wipe or image
3)activation process issue i.e. .dat file and email activation issue

Does the above sound plausible? If it does then I would be inclined to go through these steps first before trying wired.

I can get to the BES fine even though I am non-domain, but I need to figure something out that is secure for our Helpdesk folks so publishing the WDM via the firewall will have to be something I investigate.
