Default Cingular BB on Nextel BES

Please Login to Remove!

I am doing some work for an organization that has Nextel Blackberrys, a BES and GroupWise 6.5. My Blackberry provider is Cingular. Our BES admin called Nextel (I think) to order a BES license so that I can sync with their GroupWise server. He was told that it could not be done because I don't have a Nextel SIM. He said that my Cingular SIM will not work with their BES. I have always assumed that it didn't matter which provider you're using on the device side as long as you had available licenses on the BES. Was I mistaken?

We have around 2000 phones here, across all the major cell carriers and there is nothing like what you are saying here.

The carrier doesn't have anything to do with the BES end of it from what I've seen.

The company's BES gets a secure connection to the RIM servers which connect to the cell companies. Whatever PIN is associated with the account determines where the data is routed.

There is no such thing as a carrier-specific BES. You can mix and match BlackBerrys, various models and carriers all on one BES. Whoever gave out the information that you had to have a Nextel SIM is either trying to sell more Nextel gear, or just doesn't know what they are talking about.

That's what I thought. Thanks for confirming my suspicion. I think NJ is right about somebody trying to sell more Nextel gear.
