Default SQL or MSDE for BES 5.01 ?

Please Login to Remove!

Hi Everyone,
We currently have 15 users on BES 4.16 with Win server 2003 R2. I'm trying to set up a brand new server 2003 R2 box and then install BES 5.01 on it. My questions to you are:
1. I heard MSDE is discountined so can I still use MSDE on BES 5.01? Is the full SQL server, or SQL Express required?
2. Since there will be two overlapping BES boxes up and running at the same time for a short period of time, would the BES licensing be an issue? I mean, would it be possible for me to run two BES boxes with just one licensing?
Thank you in advance.

For point 2:

Yes that will likely be a problem - depending on what licenses you are reusing.
You can only run with one unique SRP ID per BES. If you bring up another BES on the same SRP, the first one will be disconnected from RIM's network.
Call RIM and ask for a migration pack or a temp SRP key. Trying to run 2 BESs with one SRP ID will just bring no end of problems...

As for CALs, RIM are usually OK, and let those run off 2 servers for a period of time. So if you are just talking about CALs, you should be OK. If you are talking about SRP and CALs, noooooo

And as for point 1... I used to use MSDE on a BES 4.1x for Domino.

On my clean-build BES 5, I let the setup install SQL 2005 locally for the DB.

hth System requirements: BlackBerry Enterprise Server databases - Installation and Configuration Guide - BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange - 5.0.2

MSDE will work fine, but running 2 or more BES it is better to have SQL express (free) or full SQL (need to be per CPU licensed since all users indirectly connect to it)

Why? MSDE only support 2 messaging agents with Exchange, SQL express and Full SQL support 5.

Default which files to download?

Got it.
By the way, when I got into Blackberry website to download, I found there is no such a file just for BES 501. From the size of files in the list, kind of can tell some are cumulated with the MRs while some not. (Well, I may be wrong.) For example, the lattest one is BESX501MR3.EXE in the size of 595MB. BESX501MR1.EXE only 29MB.
Just confused about which file is the correct one to download. Can you help?
