Default BES Server upgrade from 4.1.6 to 4.1.7 SP3

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

Currently we're running Enterprise 4.1 SP6 (4.1.6.30 through Add/Remove Programs), we found a bug SDR266939 which we need to apply at least SP6 MR5 update. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to patch it up to 4.1.7 MR3?

There's a release note in regards to when upgrading from 4.1.6 MR8 to 4.1.7, but in my case, I have plain 4.1.6 so it should be okay? I assume I need the following files:

besx_upgrader_4.1.7.exe -> main 4.1.7 update file
besx417mr3.zip -> roll-up updates 3

Prior running the update, backup the SQL database just in case? Anything else I should have a backup of?

Much appreciate your help.

You pretty much mapped it out perfectly.
Back up SQL.
Upgrade to 4.1.7.
Apply MR3.

Great, thank you for your reply. I'd assume I need to reboot after updating to 4.1.7, should I wait and confirm BB connectivity before applying MR3?

I didn't reboot after applying SP7. I only rebooted after MR3 and that worked well.

Yep it can be done with one reboot.

Okay, now I'm ready to install 4.1.7 on the server, but checklist says Exchange server not detected. A newer version of mapi32.dll may need to be installed? Is this normal? I have the Messaging API and Collaboration Data Objects 1.2.1 installed.

I was hoping to finish this tonight, but I'm not sure now! Any help would be greatly appreciated. We're running Exchange 2007 SP1.

Just go ahead. I had this warning as well but the upgrade went through without any problems.

Thank you, I patched it up the other night with 4.1.6 MR7. Live Meeting links are now working after applying the registry change. I did update to the latest CDO 1.2.1 and confirmed the build version is higher on cdo.dll. However, mapi32.dll is still the same version dated back in 2007.

So far everything seems to work fine, although I'm getting few event warnings, not sure if they're serious or more FYI:

ID 20265 -> CopyMAIBodyToStreamHTMLAware - Convert property write (PR_BODY_HTML) (0x00000057) failed

ID 20000 -> MultiByteToWideChar - Convert stream evaluate (0x00000057) failed

ID 20489 -> HTML email Refld - 1758269872 contains too little acutal text data, reverting to plaintext

Looks like they're HTML related? Thanks for your information.

It is important that you download

Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects 1.2.1

and NOT

Collaboration Data Objects, version 1.2.1

The executable for installation should be

ExchangeMapiCdo.EXE

ExchangeCdo.EXE is not good enough.

Only the files in

c:\program files\exchangemapi

are important. I have old versions in system32 as well.

From the BES server under ExchangeMAPI folder, I see the cdo.dll and version is 6.5.8165.0. I don't see mapi32.dll, only in system32 directory version 1.0.2536.0.

But you see the EXMAPI32.dll, right? That's the one you want.

I did this exact upgrade 2 weeks ago. For all those not wanting to do this upgrade "because the known issues list is longer then the fix list" (to quote someone on the forums).... if you call RIM and go through the known SDR numbers and ask them when they first appear, you will be told SP5 or SP6 for all of them... so they just weren't known/documented at the time the release notes were written for those previous SPs.

On the Live Meeting links from SDR266939.... you could also stay with SP6 MR5 and do the CDOCompatibility reg hack.... But I was coming from 4.1.4.6 and just went to the latest.

Thanks, I had the plain 4.1.6 with no MR installed. Did you get the warning about MAPI being old?

Yes, I can see EXMAPI32.DLL file in C:\Program Files\ExchangeMapi folder.

Hi, we're currently using Enterprise 4.1.6 MR5 and we're going to upgrade to 4.1.6 MR7 because we encountered the "PURGED_MESSAGE_LIST " issue. Whilst we managed to gather all the info we need to upgrade (thanks to this forum mostly), no one seems to mention a way (if it exists) to downgrade from 4.1.6 MR7 to 4.1.6 MR5 in case there's some kind of conflict with other systems.

Thanks,

Dave
