Default BB Professional v4.1 - MSDE to SQL 2005 (In-place upgrade)

Please Login to Remove!

We have BB Professional v4.1.4.3 installed on a Windows 2003 Server R2 member server. The BESMgmt database uses MSDE. We are about to upgrade this server to MS SQL Server 2005 for an application that also runs on this box. It will be an in-place upgrade of SQL. Which process should I follow to transition the BB BESMgmt database across to SQL 2005 from MSDE?

I've read KB03112 but this seems to be for moving a database to a different physical box. Or should I treat this as if this is a new installation, i.e.:

- Backup the BESMgmt database to disc
- Perform the upgrade from MSDE to SQL 2005
- Use createdb.exe to update the existing BESMgmt schema to that of the installed SQL version (SQL 2005) (by the way does createdb know which version of SQL it is dealing with and update the schema appropriately or do I need to do something else here?)
- Restore the database using the SQL Management Studio (I presume as it restores it uses the new schema it is being restored to?)

Any help gratefully accepted. Or slaps to the face for being a rookie...

Thank you,

Richard Lowe

If you follow it as new SQL move, then it should work fine.

I have never tried inplace upgrade from MSDE, but a MSDE to SQL I have done before which was fairly easy.

Thanks for the advice knottyrope, but I didn't need to do anything! The in-place upgrade of MSDE to SQL 2005 automatically upgraded all the databases. As far as BB Professional is concerned the SQL instance is the same, so everything just worked afterwards.
