Well, not everyone, but we have seen quite a rash of devices that have various problems (most commonly, can recieve mail but cannot send, get the red X, or the MAPI service is gone, and so is the Send command on the device) that are all resolved by re-running the Enterprise Activation. We used to get maybe one of these every three or four weeks and I have had 3 today alone. What kinds of things can cause the devices to lose their way like this?

BES 4.0, E2k, Win2k, 500 users.

I have found that most of these problems are caused by user's travelling - switching mobile operators and turning off for a period of time, so the pending mails queue gets higher.
But my BES is a little bit special. 400+ users in 15 different countries, 15 different mobile operator and lots of different BB devices.
But, to be honest something gets wrong about 3 times a week.

most likely the server database need to be re-fix . if you are a BES admin , quit the server and perform the re-index and fixing of database based on which database you have .
Sometime the device error is more device related which need to be re-wipe and to re-create a new encryption key.
