Default BESX w/ Hosted Exchange w/ separate GALs

Please Login to Remove!

Greetings all,

I really hope this hasn't been answered before - I searched the forum and couldn't find any specific answer.

I have a hosted exchange environment running exchange 2007. I've separated each organization in my hosted environment by assigning them their own GAL and AL. The population of the GALs and ALs are based on custom attributes applied to mailboxes... for example if the CustomAttribute1 field for a mailbox is set to a certain organizational name it will be assigned that GAL, AL and SMTP domain.

I've installed BES Express on the same machine using the besadmin user account (as described by the installation manual). When I log into the bes admin panel to create new users I only see two users (the besadmin user and the administrator user). I don't see any users from any of my other organizations. Both administrator and besadmin have a primary smtp address of besadmin @ interface.local and administrator @ interface.local where interface.local is the local domain of the Hosted Exchange server.

My question is how can I get the BES Express administration panel to show the other users in the other organizations? By what I have read on the forums already I believe it has something to do with creating a new GAL and assigning every user to that GAL - then somehow making BESX use that GAL for user lookup. Can anyone shed some light?

Much Appreciated,
- William

Default Re: BESX w/ Hosted Exchange w/ separate GALs

You are on the right track. You need to create a new, generic GAL (name it BES GAL or something useful) and assign the besadmin account read access to it. Make sure you remove groups like Authenticated Users and Everyone so that the GAL does not appear to your hosted clients. By default, the besadmin account will attach to whatever the largest address book it has permission to open, which should be this new GAL. Are you running Exchange 2003 or 2007/2010?
