Arrow Knowledge Sharing - Configure BAS HA nodes to communicate via TCPPING instead of UDP.

Please Login to Remove!

Overview

By default, the instances in the BlackBerry Administration Service pool use multicast User Datagram Protocol (UDP) to communicate with each other.

The BlackBerry Administration Service instances must be configured to use Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) to communicate with each other, if:
  • The BlackBerry Administration Service instances are located in different network subnets and
  • The organization's network configuration does not permit multicast UDP across the network subnets, or a UDP peer-to-peer firewall filter is in place
Since the release of BES 5.0, configuring TCP for BAS are done differently for each versions:-

BES 5.0 Gold Release

Edit and modify 2 files:-

(1) C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\BAS\server\default\deploy\bas-object-versioning-cache-service.xml
(2) C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\BAS\jboss\ejb\server\default\deploy\cluster-service.xml

BES 5.0 Service Pack 1

Edit and modify 4 files:-

(1) C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\BAS\jboss\ejb\server\default\deploy\cluster-service.xml
(2) C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\BAS\jboss\ejb\server\default\deploy\ ejb3-entity-cache-service.xml

BES 5.0 Service Pack 2

As a new feature of BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 SP2, this configuration can now be performed within the BlackBerry Administration Service console.

Note: Configuring TCPPing via the XML files is no longer supported in SP2 and higher. If the XML files were manually altered in any way, we will need to replace the 4 XML files in the following locations with the 4 XML files from a default 5.0 SP2 install.

This is the master KB article:-

Article Title: The BlackBerry Administration Service Application Server continues to stop and restart
Article Number: KB18366
Link: KB18366-The BlackBerry Administration Service Application Server continues to stop and restart

Overview

The BlackBerry Administration Service Application Server (BAS-AS) continues to stop and restart.

The following error appears when the administrator attempts to log in to the BlackBerry Administration Service:

Page cannot be displayed when opening the BlackBerry Administration Service.

The following log lines appear in the BAS-AS log file:

[BAS-AS]
Caused by: java.lang.Exception: problem creating sockets
(bind_addr=server.domain.com/xx.xx.xx.xx, mcast_addr=null) at org.jgroups.protocols.UDP.start(UDP.java:372)
at org.jgroups.stack.Protocol.handleSpecialDownEvent( Protocol.java:571) ... 131 more
Caused by: java.net.BindException: Address already in use: Cannot bind at java.net.PlainDatagramSocketImpl.bind0(Native Method)

--- MBEANS THAT ARE THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM ---

ObjectName: jboss.cache:service=BASObjectVersioningCache
State: FAILED
Reason: org.jgroups.ChannelException: failed to start protocol stack
I Depend On:
jboss:service=Naming
jboss:service=TransactionManager
jboss.aop:service=AspectDeployer

Cause

By default, the BlackBerry Administration Service instances use User Datagram Protocol (UDP) multi-cast to communicate with each other. If the inbound default UDP ports are in use or not available, the service does not start correctly.

By default,

(1) UDP ports are:- 48858, 48857, 48855, 45588.
(2) TCP ports are:- 49955 and 45599
