Default Add third server to BES 5.0.1 HA setup?

Please Login to Remove!

Hey guys.

New to the forum but have been administering my companies Exchange/BES setup for the last year.

In march we, transitioned from Exchange 2003 to 2007, and in June I completed an upgrade of BES 4.6 to 5.0.1. The new BES setup consists of two virtual 5.0.1 servers, one in primary location, one at DR site with the BES HA setup. BES is pointed to a SQL 2005 DB in the primary location with a mirror in the DR site (no Witness server).

Long story short, last week, our primary BES server began to throw up some odd errors consisting of with EventID 1000 xxx8220;Faulting application BlackBerrySyncServer.exe." I called RIM support and worked on the server but we could not fix the issue. Turns out the only problem we were really having due to this was Outlook Contacts not syncing to phones.

We tried a reboot per their request which did not work. At that point we failed over to the HA server and have been running on that since.

Here's the thing. BES wants us to fail back to the bad, primary server, so we can generate more logs for them to look at. Well, management does not want to do that. I've been asked by them what it would take to add a third server to our HA setup and simply scrap the faulty, primary BES VM.

I know it seems like overkill, and really, it is, but what would be involved with that process. I'm fairly handy with BES but the migration I completed was all new to me at the time and I kind of figured it out as I went. Any help you could give would be appreciated.

Thanks!

In this scenario you're not build a third. For a clean remove/install do this.

1. Uninstall BES from the primary. You need to run the uninstall so the processes can de-registered from the database.

2. Delete all the components from BAS.

3. Install your new server and make it the standby to your current operational server.

I've done this a couple of time.

Thanks! That's pretty much what I figured. Quick question though, what do you mean by #2? Can you elaborate?

After you do the uninstall, the components (BES, MDS-CS, Collaboration, etc) will still appear in BAS. If you are going to re-install using the same server name then you can leave them otherwise delete them.

See KB20515-How to remove decommissioned BlackBerry Enterprise Servers from the BlackBerry Administration Service console

Ah, so if I rename the new server the same as the decommissioned one, there won't be anything to do in BAS?
