I am trying to install BES X 5.0.2 ( Bundle 14 ) on Windows 2008 R2 with Exchange 2010 SP1 ( non-hosting mode ). Everything runs on the same server.

I am hitting a brick wall in getting BES X to use the SQL Express 2005 installation we have. I have followed all the instructions available on the Blackberry Website, including the video but I can't get it to connect to SQL. My last steps were:

1. Created a BLACKBERRY instance under SQL Express 2005

2. Using the Management Studio I can login to that instance from within the Administrator account. I added user 'besadmin' as allowed to connect there too

3. Using the Management Studio I can login to that instance from within the 'besadmin' account. In Management Studio I simply connect to: EXCH1\BLACKBERRY using Windows Authentication and I'm in!

4. Continuing the BES X installation ( after restart ) I have to enter the SQL details. I enter the same thing: EXCH1\BLACKBERRY , point the data directory & backup to the proper places. When I hit 'Next' it takes a loooong time and comes back with: An attempt to connect the database was unsuccesfull. Refer to the installation log file for more information.

Please note that EXCH1 points to 127.0.0.1. I don't think that matters since Management Studio connects just fine to EXCH1\BLACKBERRY

Any ideas ?

Fixed the issue by enabling Named Pipes in SQL Server 2005:

Go to Start > Microsoft SQL Server 2005 > Configuration Tools > SQL Server Configuration Manager > SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration.
Select the Microsoft SQL server instance that houses the BlackBerry Configuration Database.
Right click on Named Pipes and select Enable.
Right click on TCP/IP and select Enable.
If you enabled a protocol in step c, restart the Microsoft SQL Services.

It's very strange that Management Studio could connect without Named Pipes enabled but BES X could not.
