We currently have BES 4.1.6 with all our Blackberries on.
We have recently built a new BES 5.0.2 server which currently has 3 test users on, we hope to soon move the 350+ users from the old server to this new server.

The problem we have is this:

The 'BAS-AS.exe' service is hogging memory.
The server is on VMWare, built to RIMs suggested specification. We have the database on a separate SQL server in the same location. The BES currently has 2GB of RAM. Immediately after a reboot about 1.69GB of memory is being used and this slowly increases.

Having done some Googling on the subject this seems to have have been encountered by a lot of people, with some reports dating back to early 2010 but there seems to be no fix for it.

Has anyone managed to fix the problem? Does it get worse with more users added? At the moment I am loathe to start adding users in case they start having problems using their Blackberries.

My BAS-AS has about 140MB at start, and if the system is running for a while, this increases to about 700MB, and stays there.

better give the server +1GB of RAM, or move the BAS-AS to a different machine.

Thanks. I take it then that RIM aren't bothering to fix this, or even update their prerequisites to needing two separate servers and more RAM.

Out of interest, if more RAM is added does the BAS service just eat more of it? I can't keep asking for more!!

Which messaging system are you running? Exchange? Domino?
AFAIR documentation indicates that BES for Domino requires even more RAM.

I agree that RIM really needs to focus on this problem, even though the memory requirements are properly documented.

We have Exchange 2003.

We are running the BES on Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit with 2GB of RAM. According to the RIM documentation I saw this is what is recommended.

Is there other documentation that says something different? If so can you point me at please.

No, it should't eat more. According to T-Support, that's just the way it works. Whether or not it needs to, I don't know since I'm not a server guy. I think more RAM is just going to give you peace of mind. We run our BES on 2GB with no problems, and it's not a dedicated machine. We have a few, small-footprint apps running on it, as well. The only issue I have with it is waiting for the BAS service to start before I can get into the UI.

BAS-AS eats 700 MB and it takes +- 2 minutes to fully start, more memory doesn't reduce that time. It is a java application, so what else do you expect....
