We've recently upgraded from BES 4.0.7 to 5.0.3, whilst the upgrade has brought many useful features and has generally had positive feedback from our end-users. There is one aspect that they are complaining about, Contacts.

Previously on 4.0.7 when you did a contacts look up the BES only searched our Departmental directory (names.nsf) however if you now do a lookup it searches the names.nsf file and our larger organisational address file.

Has anyone got any suggestions on how to fix this? It's basically made the Lookup function unusable.

BES doesn't anyhow probe the other directories in the Domino environment unless you have configured its Domino server that host it to do so. By default the only Domino Directory (DA) known to BES i.e. NAMES.NSF. If you have Directory Assistance setup for other directories, BES searches those as well via the Notes API call for looking up contacts.

You should check in your Domino environment if:-

(1) DA has been setup
(2) User the Domino console command: show xdir and see how many directories are made known to BES

You will find your answers with the above.

No problem, Chris. BES relies on Domino to function properly, so it is always good to think in terms of BES as a client, calling Domino as a service provider. BTW, BES communicates with Domino via Notes API calls.
